Humpback whale Fern closed September for us with some big feeding—kick feeding & lunge feeding, & flipper slapping to the point she was bloody from knocking off barnacles.

Fern was one of the first whales to be disentangled by CCS in the 80’s & throughout her life with her calves and grand calves, she’s proof that her rescue impacted this population positively. Thanks CCS.

*Notice the barnacle scars on her jaw, her daughter Bounce has very similar ones.

Thanks to CCS Humpback studies program for curating the catalog and life histories of our whales.
