Welcome to Danny's Dispatch! Step into the rich history of Ireland with Cara Group Travel as Danny visits Christ Church Cathedral Dublin Visit Dublin.

Christ Church Cathedral was originally Roman Catholic and was also known as The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. In 1152, Christ Church Cathedral was incorporated into the Irish Church. The cathedral is the oldest of Dublin's two medieval cathedrals, the other being Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Christ Church Cathedral is also home to the relic of the Heart of Lorcan Ua Tuathail.

Here’s more history behind Christ Church Cathedral:

Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, one of Ireland's most historic landmarks, traces its origins to around 1030, when it was founded by the Norse King Sitriuc (Sigtrygg Silkbeard) and Bishop Dúnán. The cathedral underwent numerous transformations, including a significant reform by Laurence O’Toole in the 12th century and later reconstructions by John Cumin following the Norman invasion. Over the centuries, the building witnessed pivotal historical moments, such as King Richard II’s visit in 1395 and the gift of a set of gold communion plates by King William III after the Battle of the Boyne. In the Victorian era, major restorations were carried out, largely funded by distiller Henry Roe. Today, the cathedral houses an exhibition of its rich history and a world-famous set of bells.

In this installment of Dany’s Dispatch, Danny whisks us away to the Aran Islands. With the help of Aer Arann Islands, Danny was able to get a bird’s-eye view of what the islands have to offer. Nestled at the mouth of Galway Bay (Visit Galway) off Ireland’s wild west coast, the Aran Islands consist of three rocky isles: Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer. These islands are a dreamy escape where time seems to slow down.

Imagine a place where the Irish language dances through the air, ancient stone forts like Dún Aonghasa stand guard over dramatic cliffs, and traditional Aran sweaters tell tales of the past. Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer beckon with rugged landscapes adorned with stone walls, cozy thatched cottages, and a tapestry of history and culture as rich as the emerald hills themselves. Here, you can cycle along winding paths, discover early Christian monasteries, savor local delicacies, and perhaps even hear a tale or two in a lively pub. Accessible by ferry or a quick flight, these enchanting islands offer a glimpse into a world where ancient traditions and modern adventures harmoniously blend.

Seven Interesting Facts about The Aran Islands:

1. The islands boast an unusually temperate climate, creating an exceptionally long growing season despite their northern Atlantic location.
2. Literary luminary J.M. Synge's vivid descriptions of island life in the early 1900s sparked a wider interest in Aran culture.
3. Isolation has preserved many ancient Celtic and early Christian traditions on the islands.
4. Local legend suggests the intricate stitching of Aran sweaters helped identify drowned fishermen.
5. The lightweight Aran currach boats are uniquely crafted to withstand the rough Atlantic waves.
6. The islands were a refuge for Irish fleeing persecution during the Cromwellian conquest in the 1600s.
7. Early Christian figures like St. Enda established monasteries on the islands as early as the 5th century AD.
