One of the first questions visitors ask when visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Administration Building is “How do you change the light bulbs?!”

Since the building’s lighting is located between a layer of glass tubes and rooftop skylights, there is no practical way to change light bulbs.

At one point, the “Trojan Horse,” an affectionately named 15-foot high, wheeled scaffold, was kept in the Great Workroom so workers could unwire and remove tubes to change the burnt-out bulbs when needed. 💡🤔

Frank Lloyd Wright embraced a philosophy he called organic architecture. Rather than design a structure that stood out among its surroundings, he designed structures that brought the natural world inside the building.

This same philosophy guided Wright as he developed SC Johnson’s Administration Building in the late 1930s. He named the columns he created dendriform, or tree-shaped and promised the company’s third generation leader that the building would make someone “feel as though he were among pine trees breathing fresh air and sunlight.”

It’s difficult to imagine SC Johnson’s iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Research Tower looking any other way, but its first floor wasn’t always planned to be a simple door into the core of the building.

Wright originally envisioned the Tower’s first floor to be a large reception area enclosed in plate glass. However, six months prior to the building’s open, Wright decided to go with the more dramatic look we know and admire today. SC Johnson’s third-generation leader H.F. Johnson, Jr. made bold decisions that moved the company forward in many ways. He was the company’s first professionally trained chemist and was a lifelong proponent of the value of science and technology.

During the Great Depression when businesses across the nation were struggling, it was H.F., Jr.’s deeply held belief in innovation that kept the company afloat. He launched Glo-Coat, a revolutionary, one-step floor polisher that was extremely successful. He also led the company through the depression without laying off a single employee.

After the SC Johnson-commissioned film To Be Alive! premiered at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, it quickly became one of the fair’s most popular attractions. By the time the fair was over, more than 5 million people had seen the film, with some having waited up to two hours just to do so.
