In honor of National Pasta Day, here’s a stunning pasta dish from our recent trip to Italy. Sadly, the closest I’ll get to those authentic flavors today is a humble bowl of mac and cheese. But hey, it’s the thought that counts, right? 🍝😄

Spiritual preparation is the foundation of a meaningful pilgrimage.

Since the 4th century, Christians have embarked on these sacred journeys to draw closer to God, and that journey begins in the heart. Before setting foot in Rome, we will have spent three months working through a series of pre-travel devotions and spiritual practices designed to ready our spirit for what's ahead. I am so excited to see what God has in store for this trip.

I think it is so important to remember Sept 11, but I think it is equally important to remember and teach our children about Sept 12.

23 years ago Pete and I were living in Pembroke Pines Florida. Our neighborhood was probably 75% immigrants from across central and South America as well as Lebanon and Haiti. On Sept 12 every house on our street put up an American flag and put white candles in our windows. We gathered spontaneously in the street for a potluck. We ate roasted pork and tabbouleh salad, tres leches cake and whatever else people came out with.

We were Americans.

Together we mourned, prayed, and comforted one another.

Our children have grown up, or come of age, in an America that is toxically divided, they need to know the stories of America before this era when how you vote or how you got here matters more than the simple label we are all fortunate to bear of being an American.

While I pray we never see another Sept 11th, I do pray we can turn back from who we are today and be an America of Sept 12th.

A question I often receive is, “Why take a pilgrimage? Isn’t going on a mission trip better?” It is not an either-or choice, where one choice has a higher value than the other. Meeting the physical, material, or spiritual needs of any of God’s children is a worthy endeavor, and you are included on His list of children.

Pilgrimage is fully about you. It’s about your spiritual life, your relationship with Christ, and taking time to deepen your understanding of both God and yourself. If a pilgrimage has a mission, the mission is you, and you, dear sister, are a worthy mission in the eyes of God.

Through pilgrimage, you will fill your own pitcher (and potentially heal some of those cracks life has brought you) and return home better prepared to serve your local mission field. We have seen years of fruit come from women investing one week in themselves through pilgrimage. If you are sensing the Lord nudging you to go on pilgrimage, I encourage you to explore, learn, and lean into that voice. God may have something beautiful waiting for you.

Last year, seven sets of mothers and daughters went on a pilgrimage together to either France or Italy. As one of those lucky moms who got to pilgrimage with both of my daughters, there is something so special to having this time together. From pre-travel spiritual preparation, to shared meals while traveling and in depth time for spiritual conversations, it is a unique way to grow your mother/daughter relationship and see one another as first and foremost a daughter of God.

LOP trips consider applicants from the age of 17 and often have travelers over the age of 70, so there is room in our groups for women of all ages. Perhaps its time to plant the seed with your mother or daughter to travel together on pilgrimage in 2025! Our Italy 2025 pilgrimage registration will open in early Oct. We would love to have you both consider joining us!

If you are only reading theological books, devotionals, and Bible Studies written in the last thirty years, you are building blinders as much as you are building theological/Biblical knowledge.

I love this quote from C.S. Lewis:

“Every Age has its own outlook. It is especially good at seeing certain truths and especially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period… The only palliative is to keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds, and this can be done only by reading old books. Not, of course, that there is any magic about the past. People were no cleverer then than they are now; they made as many mistakes as we. But not the same mistakes. They will not flatter us in the errors we are already committing, and their own error, being now open and palpable, will not endanger us. Two heads are better than one, not because either is infallible, but because they are unlikely to go wrong in the same direction.”

Some of the women I have been reading over the last few years include Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, and Catherine of Siena. These sisters in the faith write in language that makes me stop and think, with imagery that is so different than what we use today, and yet in all of them, one finds a God who deeply loves and unendingly pursues His children.

Who have you read that was written 50, 100, or even 800 years ago? I would love to hear.

Quote: C.S. Lewis, “Introduction,” in The Incarnation of the Word of God; Being the Treatise of St. Athanasius De Incarnatione Verbe Dei.

A review from one of our Italy pilgrimages...
“Though I hoped it would be the beginning of a new season, I didn’t know if it was even possible.
The love and care, community, and teaching brought life to this numb heart.

It’s as if the valves are again working, circulating blood throughout my body for me to live with joy reborn. Thank you!!”

It's so encouraging to hear these kind words about Life on Pilgrimage trips. These journeys really are life-changing!

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, stand firm then and do not let yourself be burdened by a yoke of slavery. Gal 5:1

In his letter to the Galatians, Paul had some feisty and strong words to say to his brothers and sisters of faith. He repeatedly urged them to cast off any false teachings that add any act or work to Christ’s sacrifice for salvation.

Today, just as 2000 years ago, we struggle with the temptation to add to the teachings of Christ. I think one of the strongest anti-dotes to this is to learn about our brothers and sisters who went before us. When we learn about what earlier believers focused on, how they lived (and often died) for Christ, it creates a mirror for us to look at our faith and see the things in our own day and time that we may have added to Christ’s teachings.

As Paul says in Gal 5:1, Christ came for your freedom, dear sisters. Do not let the world, the news, your local church, or even your Instagram feed put a yoke of slavery on you by adding acts or works to your salvation. Stand firm in your freedom through Christ.

Here are three titles to help you learn more about the faith of women who went before us:
Finding Phoebe by Susan Hylen
All Will Be Well, Julian of Norwich, published by Ava Maria Press
Reformation Women by Rebecca VanDoodewaard.

“My friends are my ‘estate’.” ~ Emily Dickinson

True friends, sisters of faith, the women we can lean on and learn indeed make up some of greatest treasures here on earth. So many women I talk to are longing for real friendship. They want women to lean on, to tell the truth to, to pray with and for, and to laugh out loud with!

One of the most common post-pilgrimage pieces of feedback we receive is about friendships made.
“I made life-long friends.”
“I will have these women in my life forever.”
“My heart is full of new friendships.”

Life on Pilgrimage journeys last long beyond our travels, and one of the greatest souvenirs we take with us, is our pilgrimage sister-friends. We would love to count you as a pilgrimage friend. Consider joining us in Fall 2025, or Spring 2026 on pilgrimage! Follow along for more info and find out more about our trips on our website!

There can be many advantages to booking a trip further in advance than you might initially think you need to... more time to budget, to plan and research, and potentially the opportunity to take advantage of some great rates on lodgings, travel, etc.!

Take this as permission to start planning your dream trip ASAP! Where are you going? 😍
