You are not alone.....

It's been over a month since Hurricane Helene hit our mountain community. During this time, FEMA has provided over $213.5 million to
more than 126,000 households and
individuals in North Carolina to help aid in recovery after this major disaster. However, what if your application did not receive approval? If FEMA says you are ineligible for assistance, it is not a denial. Often, you may need to send more information or supporting documentation for FEMA to continue reviewing your
application for financial assistance.
While this is disheartening at best, we want to let you know that you are not alone!

The top 5 reasons your FEMA Assistance application was marked as ineligible are the following:

1. You have insurance coverage for the loss
2. Your home is still safe to live in despite the damages
3. The damaged home was not your primary residence
4. You received assistance for the same losses or expenditures from another source
5. FEMA Inspectors have been unable to reach you at the contact information you provided

If you disagree with FEMA’s decision, you may appeal in any of the following ways:

Online: If you set up an online account, appeals can be
managed this way. Visit DisasterAssistance.gov, log into your
account and upload all supporting documents using the correspondence tab and select "Upload Center."

In-Person: Visit a Disaster Recovery Center. Be sure to bring your documents. The Disaster Recovery Center in Boone is located at 130 Poplar Grove Connector at the Appalachian Enterprise Center.

Here are some Halloween safety tips to keep things spooky but safe! 🎃👻

For Trick-or-Treaters:

Bright Costumes: Wear light-colored costumes or use reflective tape to stay visible in the dark. ✨

Safe Masks: Ensure that masks don’t obstruct your vision or breathing. Face paint is a great alternative! 🎨

Stay in Groups: Stick with friends or family while trick-or-treating. There's safety in numbers! 👯

Crosswalks Only: Always use sidewalks and cross at designated crosswalks. Look both ways! 🚸

Flashlights & Glow Sticks: Carry a flashlight or glow sticks to light your way and stay visible to drivers. 🔦

Avoid Dark Houses: Only visit homes with porch lights on. 💡
Inspect Candy: Wait until you get home to check your candy for tampering before eating. 🍬

For Parents:
Plan the Route: Make sure your kids know a safe trick-or-treat route. 🗺️
Supervision: If your children are younger, accompany them or arrange for a trusted adult to do so. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
