Africa started as a hobby and a 6 week stint in Sou

th Africa turned into a longer exploration of Southern Africa, that Richard wanted to share with other travellers. The business started small, concentrating primarily on South Africa, but has morphed into a concentration including all of Southern and East Africa. We have travelled and continue to travel throughout the area and strive to send all of our clients only to places that we have visited personally. Red-billed oxpeckers are often seen as helpful tick removers, but are they truly mutualistic partners to Africa’s ungulates? Research suggests their relationship may be more parasitic than beneficial. While oxpeckers do pick off ticks, they also feed on the blood from the wounds they create—sometimes even preventing healing to keep the meal going! 🩸🦜 Instead of relieving their hosts, they might be exploiting them.

In honor of that passed this week:

Southern Right Whale (𝘌𝘶𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴). 🐋

These gentle giants are commonly seen along the southern coasts of Africa, Australia, and South America during their annual migrations.

🌊 Southern right whales are known for their distinctive callosities on their heads, which help researchers identify individual whales.

🐾 They are baleen whales, feeding by filtering tiny organisms like krill and plankton through their baleen plates.

🌏 Once hunted to near extinction, their populations have slowly recovered due to global conservation efforts, though they remain vulnerable to climate change and ship strikes.

Pink Amazon River Dolphin (𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴). 🐬

Also known as the boto, this unique freshwater dolphin is found in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins.

🌊 Unlike marine dolphins, pink river dolphins have flexible necks, allowing them to maneuver easily through flooded forests in search of fish and crustaceans.

🎨 Their pink coloration becomes more intense with age, with males often appearing the most vibrant due to increased scar tissue from social interactions.

⚠️ Habitat destruction, pollution, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear threaten their populations, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.

Polar Bear (𝘜𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘴). 🐻‍❄️

The polar bear is the largest land carnivore, perfectly adapted to life in the harsh Arctic environment.

❄️ Their thick fur and a layer of blubber help insulate them against freezing temperatures, while their black skin absorbs and retains heat.

🐟 Polar bears are powerful swimmers, using their large, webbed paws to propel themselves through icy waters in search of seals—their primary food source.

⚠️ Climate change and melting sea ice pose a major threat to polar bear populations, as they rely on the ice for hunting and survival.

Komodo Dragon (𝘝𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘬𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴). 🦎

The largest living lizard in the world, the Komodo dragon, is native to a few Indonesian islands, including Komodo and Rinca.

🦴 These apex predators can grow up to 3 meters long and weigh over 70 kilograms, with a powerful bite containing venom that helps subdue their prey.

🌡️ Komodo dragons are ectothermic and rely on basking in the sun to regulate their body temperature, often seen soaking up the tropical heat.

⚠️ Despite their fearsome reputation, they play an essential role in maintaining the ecological balance on their native islands.

Madagascan Sunset Moth (𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘶𝘴). 🦋

This stunning day-flying moth, native to Madagascar, is celebrated for its iridescent, rainbow-like wings.

🌈 The vibrant colors of the Madagascan sunset moth are not due to pigments but are created by light refracting through microscopic scales on its wings.

🌺 These moths are important pollinators, feeding on nectar from a variety of flowering plants.

⚠️ While visually breathtaking, their larvae feed on toxic plants, which makes the moths unpalatable to predators—a brilliant defense mechanism!

White-Backed Vulture (𝘎𝘺𝘱𝘴 𝘢𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴). 🦅

This critically endangered scavenger plays a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems across sub-Saharan Africa.

🦴 White-backed vultures feed primarily on carrion, preventing the spread of diseases by cleaning up animal remains.

🌍 They nest in tall trees and are often found near savannas and open woodlands, where their sharp eyesight helps them spot food from great distances.

⚠️ These vultures face significant threats from habitat loss, poisoning, and human-wildlife conflict, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.

Vaccinating wild animals from the helicopter is always a highlight for our wildlife vet students! 😍🥳

Here in Chobe National Park, Botswana at a stunning and affordable lodge and campground, Mwandi View owned by Amalia & Anton du Plessis. Watering hole last night had maybe 100 elephants coming through from about 8PM, onwards. Non stop. Then the hippo came in big numbers. Then a lioness. Whole place was alive as you can see. At the end of this video is where elephants head off to the left of the tree. They meet hippo coming into the watering hole. You cannot see it but there is a sole lioness in between in the bushes. She starts calling. All 3 animal groups calling at one time. I stayed up until 2AM to watch it all. Never stopped with animals from dusk to when I left. Drought in Botswana so there is no water and the animals are here every night in these numbers.
