World Giraffe Day may have been on Saturday, but we believe these gentle giants deserve to be celebrated every day! 🦒❤️

With fewer than 117,000 giraffes remaining in the wild, they are quietly slipping towards extinction. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching have all taken a toll—yet their story often goes unnoticed.

Giraffes are more than just long necks and graceful walks. They are ecosystem engineers, seed spreaders, and icons of the African savannah.

Let’s raise our voices, and stand tall for giraffes.

📣 Support giraffe conservation.

Frilled Lizard (𝘊𝘩𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘺𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘪). 🦎

Famous for its dramatic frill, this lizard is a true showstopper found in northern Australia and parts of New Guinea.

🦖 When threatened, it raises its large, colorful frill around its head, opens its mouth wide, and may even run on its hind legs to scare off predators.

🌞 Frilled lizards are arboreal and diurnal, spending most of their time in trees and coming down to hunt insects, spiders, and small vertebrates.

🎨 The frill isn’t just for defense—it can also be used in territorial displays and courtship, making it a multi-purpose accessory!

Have you ever seen this prehistoric-looking reptile in action? 🧐

Thank you to Vet Books for Africa, for inviting us to your special gala dinner! 🤩 Together we celebrated the 2023/2024 committee members and welcomed the 2025/2026 members! 😎

Vet Books for Africa is an amazing organisation that sources vet textbooks and equipment from International schools and donates them to vet programs all across the African continent. Our vet students from America take part in this initiative by bringing their books and supplies from overseas when they visit our vet student program each year. 🐾🩺

Keep up the amazing work!

Did you know its World Turtle Day!? 🐢

Turtles are ancient reptiles, having roamed the Earth for over 200 million years—long before the dinosaurs disappeared.

⚠️ Sadly, more than half of the world’s turtle species are threatened due to habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and the illegal pet trade.

❤️ Today is a reminder to appreciate and protect these incredible creatures, whose calm presence plays a vital role in ecosystems around the world.

We’d like to thank Dr. Clarissa Souza (far right in the middle image) and the 45 University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine students for meeting with Richard Pace, founder of Southern Sky Adventures, and Dr. Ron Cott to discuss the opportunity to participate in our South Africa Vet Student trip. Dr. Cott, University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine ‘73 and founder of the program, shared his experience and answered questions with Richard. 🥳

We look forward to seeing some students joining our vet programs! 😎

Crab Spiders (Family: 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦). 🕷️

Named for their crab-like appearance and sideways scuttle, crab spiders are masters of camouflage and ambush.

🌼 These clever hunters often hide in flowers, blending in with petals to surprise unsuspecting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

🎨 Some species can even change color over a few days to better match their environment—perfect for stealthy hunting.

🕸️ Unlike many spiders, they don’t spin webs to catch prey. Instead, they rely on patience, strength, and lightning-fast reflexes.

Have you ever spotted one hiding in plain sight? 🧐
