Our Story
In early 2011, Kelly and I saw I AM, a documentary that calls upon every person to be part of what’s right with the world. Around that time, we started bringing a huge chocolate cake (seriously, a massive and delicious homemade cake) to a local meal for the homeless every Saturday morning. Such a hit in fact, that Molly, the restaurant owner who runs the project, insisted on giving us a
free breakfast at her place as a thank you. This swap not only made giving back a lot more fun, but Molly’s giving spirit made us look at her business in a whole new light. This experience created within us a feeling of connectedness to our community that we were inspired to duplicate. After months of hard work, we launched a test version of our site in October 2011 from our own backyard with our family and friends. This was the first time we had shared SwapServe with a group of people, and we were overwhelmed by everyone’s enthusiasm and eagerness to sign up. In the months that followed, we received a great response from local businesses and were able to accomplish a great deal in our community. With the help of our first group of dedicated Swappers, we were able to collect food for families in need, write letters to sailors deployed on the USS Carl Vinson, help build a community garden, clean up local parks, visit with seniors at a local rehabilitation center, and support the families of hospitalized children. By volunteering through SwapServe, Swappers were able to have a rewarding volunteer experience and also get something from a local business as a thank you. Unlike a coupon or a promotion, this helped Swappers truly connect with businesses that they may not have otherwise known about on a much deeper level because of their commitment to the community. As a team, we took everything we learned and used it to build SwapServe as it stands today. Because of its great sense of community engagement and free spirited style, we decided on Portland as the first city of our official launch. In the name of research, (mostly because it sounded like an awesome time) we decided to take a road trip up to Portland in February of 2013. After 4 days of bacon maple doughnuts, compostable everything, and the nicest people we’ve ever met, we knew we had picked the right place to launch
It turns out we were right. Portland’s businesses, nonprofits, and people have welcomed us with open arms, and we are continually inspired by the passion and energy we see in people whenever we share our vision with them. We’re super excited to see how far this can go and how many people we can help. Thank you so much for being a part of it. Have fun,
Derek and the SwapServe Team
