Journey through a quaint neighborhood, and just when you think you're lost, a serene oasis unveils this architectural marvel - Chapel in the Hills.

Chapel in the Hills is a stunning replica of Norway's Borgund Stavkirke. Why a Norwegian chapel in South Dakota? It's a nod to the region's rich Norwegian Lutheran heritage. Portions of the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail are temporarily closed, and the entire Sunday Gulch Trail are closed in Custer State Park for improvements. If you need other gorgeous hike suggestions for in the park or in the area reach out!

Custer State Park is excited to announce the start of a major trail upgrade project aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and preserving the natural beauty of the park. To facilitate these improvements, portions of the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail will be temporarily closed, while the entire Sunday Gulch Trail will be closed starting September 9, 2024, and continue into spring of 2025.

These upgrades are integral to the 2019 Sylvan Lake Master Plan, a community-assisted initiative designed to improve Sylvan Lake resources, amenities, and accessibility. The project will include rerouting sections of the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail, constructing new boardwalks and observation decks, and installing informative interpretive signs. These improvements will assist the Park with resource protection and sustainability for future generations to come.

“We understand that these closures may temporarily inconvenience our park visitors, and we apologize for any disruption,” said Lydia Austin, Visitor Services Supervisor at Custer State Park. “However, we are confident that the long-term benefits of these improvements will greatly enhance the park experience for everyone as well as protect the future of one of our more iconic areas of the park.”

The park is committed to keeping the public informed throughout the project and will provide regular updates on progress. Alternative trails and access points will remain open during the construction period.

It's an incredible experience to watch horseback riders drive a herd of over 1,400 bison through a valley and into a corral in Custer State Park. That's what awaits spectators at the annual Buffalo Roundup.

This effort is completed each year to maintain the health of the herd with immunizations, health inspections and an auction of excess animals. If the herd was not maintained, the parks’ 71,000 acres of open grassland would be overrun leaving scarce resources.

Here are seven tips for attending this event: https://bit.ly/3Z8hRKi
