A sad review explaining why you should always buy the travel insurance and use a travel agent for your vacations:
Quick and Honest Review:
Our family of 8 (3 rooms) arrived on April 7 (yes, I know this is a late one...you'll understand why later). We had upgraded my parents to premium because they are elderly and we wanted them to be comfortable and as we were told - closer to everything. When we found our rooms, our parent's premium room was no different than ours other than it faced the ocean with palm trees gloriously blocking the view, A/C didn't work and fridge was not stocked. To make it even less worthy of our hard earned money, the distance to "everything at the palace" was still a good quarter mile walk for my parents. The resort in and of itself is more than we have experienced as a family. I might mention, we were taking this big family trip because my dad was diagnosed with melanoma a year ago and we just felt it was necessary to do something fun that most of the family hadn't experienced (leaving the country, going all inclusive, etc).
Now I'm going to share what we experienced in regards to a medical emergency (no reflection of the resort). JUST DON'T HAVE A MEDICAL EMERGENCY! My mom fell ill on the 10th (3 days after arriving). We thought she had food poisoning, so brought food that she couldn't keep down, tried to get her to drink bottled water or even juice, provided tums and anything else one could think of. She just kept going downhill. By Friday we were "rushing" her to the ER in Playa Del Carmen. We called the resort doctor who after examining our mom, called an ambulance. It took over an hour for the ambulance to arrive. When they did, they weren't quick by any means and required payment upfront ($350 US) - they also drove the speed limit to Playa Del Carmen and no lights/sirens. I couldn't believe it. Once we were at the ER, they required a down payment of $4,000 (USD) to admit my VERY CRITICAL mom to the hospital. She went into cardiac arrest during this time of us trying to pull together $4K in credit cards, in which they did treat her. After being at the ER for approximately 8 hours, we were told mom would need to be transferred to a larger hospital in Cancun and asked if we wanted public or private. We were very quickly educated as to the difference - please always choose private - not kidding, it's just like it looks on TV. We obviously chose private and were told we'd need to pay and additional $9,000 USD for the additional bill they'd run up in those 8 hours. Again, we got the credit cards out. After that payment we were told we'd have to pay for the ambulance transfer up front, another $850 USD and to top it off, a downpayment of $25,000 to admit our mom to the Cancun hospital! We ended up calling family to loan us the monies. Once at the Cancun hospital, we went through all the same paperwork and payment junk as at the ER in Playa Del Carmen. We were told our mother would most likely have brain damage, but they don't know how much, her kidneys and pancreas were failing and offered a "hyper dialysis" option but also told my dad "I'd let her go, this may not work". My dad said to try and we were sent home. Please note - we were lead to believe my mom was stable enough to receive this dialysis. We got a hotel across the street from the hospital at about 4am and slept for 4 hours before we received a call that mom had passed away - IN MEXICO! What came next was for some of us more traumatic than a shocking and catastrophic loss. We had to pay amounts of money I still don't know all the amounts in order to have our mom "shipped" from the hospital to a funeral home, embalmed and then "shipped" on a cargo plane like an Amazon package to the US. We were supposed to fly back to the States on Sunday, April 14 as a family of 8. Three of our family members went home on the 14th, Three of us were home with our mother on Tuesday, April 16.
If you are traveling out of your country of citizenship, PLEASE, I BEG YOU - book with a travel agent, BUY THE INSURANCE and have travel health insurance. Also, we had these things, but they will only reimburse us - so, make sure the plans/coverage you have will pay at time of catastrophe or be sure you have $100,000 USD or more to pay the medical cartel.
