I Just Upgraded My Red River Drinking Experience

I need to preface this article by admitting to the fact that I am in no way a connoisseur of adult beverages. My experience and knowledge of drinking has not ventured much from my college days when I got good at popping a top on a cold beer and pouring some bourbon into a glass. Don’t get me wrong...

It's May 1! And that means many annual changes around the Forest. Here's what's going on:

ROAD OPENINGS

Hundreds of roads closed to vehicles on Jan. 1 reopened today, however visitors should be aware access may be limited after a strong winter. Some roads may be blocked by snow, impassable due to mud/flooding or blocked by fallen trees. Send us a direct message to report any issues you find out there.

ROAD CLOSURES

Some roads that typically reopen today will remain closed to vehicles due to extreme conditions or major obstacles.

- Forest Road 116 (Santa Barbara Road) near Peñasco will remain closed due to large boulders blocking the road. We will post a reopening announcement once crews clear the road.
- Near Canjilon and El Rito, Forest Roads 124, 125 (Trout Lakes Road) and 559 on the Canjilon and El Rito ranger districts will remain closed due to extreme conditions. The continued closures will affect access to connecting roads and destinations, such as Canjilon Lakes and El Rito Campground.

Other roads were closed to vehicles today to minimize disturbance of elk during calving season. The annual closures will be in two areas:

- The Midnight Meadows/Greenie Peak areas to the north of Red River, NM, in the Questa Ranger District.
- A few roads north of U.S. Route 64 near Hopewell Campground on the Tres Piedras District. Details are listed on the district's respective Motorized Vehicle Travel Maps (Questa, Tres Piedras) under the "seasonal vehicle designations" table: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/carson/maps-pubs/?cid=fseprd585896&width=full

VALLE VIDAL

The annual west side closure in Valle Vidal for elk protection also went into effect today. Forest Road 1900 (Costilla Dam Road) will close while Forest Road 1950 (Valle Vidal Road) will remain open in the closure area (visitors must stay on the road). The east side of Valle Vidal reopened April 1. Details of the closure, including a map, are available online: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd892809.pdf.
