The Carson National Forest will close the area around Wheeler Peak and Williams Lake from Fri., Aug. 16, through Mon., Aug. 26, for tribal traditional and cultural purposes.

The following trails will be closed:

• Williams Lake ( #62)
• Wheeler Summit ( #67)
• Wheeler Peak ( #90) between La Cal Basin and Wheeler Peak
• Lost Lake ( #91) between Horseshoe Lake and Wheeler Peak

The Williams Lake basin, including Kachina and Lake Fork peaks, and the ridgeline from east of Taos Cone to Simpson Peak will additionally be closed.

A map and forest orders is forthcoming.

“It is critical that the Forest Service listen and work with tribal communities,” said Forest Supervisor James Duran. “And we are happy to continue supporting traditional needs that exist across the landscape.”

“We recognize the inconvenience the closure might bring to visitors and appreciate their flexibility,” added Duran.

Visitors to the area during the closure can use the following trails:

• Yerba ( #61)
• Manzanita ( #58)
• Italianos ( #59)
• Gavilan ( #60)
• Long Canyon ( #63) via Wheeler Peak Trail ( #90)
• Gold Hill ( #64) to its namesake destination via Long Canyon ( #63)

"In the early 1990s, if you drove through Red River after Labor Day weekend, you would find most of the stores shuttered. Store owners who lived out of state had returned to their homes, and full-time locals were on trips out of town. And so, if you had driven through, you would have just kept rolling through our stoplight-less town. This didn't seem right to the business owners who were still in town in September and beyond! Local shop owners and Chamber members recognized that, with its stunning fall foliage and undeniable charm, Red River was an ideal autumnal escape that should be shared with others. They repeatedly asked, “Why not create a festival that attracts folks and encourages them to visit in the fall?”

For nearly a decade, conversations about an October festival gained momentum until that core group of visionaries decided they would present a Red River twist on the beloved Bavarian tradition: Oktoberfest. As soon as they hosted their first three Oktoberfests they, “knew right away – the event had legs." (Fritz Davis, Member of the Red River Chamber of Commerce). It is thus that Oktoberfest has been presented every year since, only breaking due to the pandemic in 2020."
