Carry-on for airplane:
Each passenger is allowed 2 bags. International flights, first checked bag is free
I recommend:
Large tote / Cross body bag for women
Back pack and money belt for men
Personal Medicine - sleep meds, etc.
Jewelry
Phone charger
Granola bars
Empty water bottle
Socks - its always cold on a overnight flight
Neck pillow/magazines/book
Women wear scarf on the plane - cold
Eye mask-ear plugs
Portable phone charger
Packing tips:
Remove things in your wallet, you know you wont be needing - keep medical ins. Card
Instant coffee singles - for the coffee lovers like me !
All adapters for whichever country you are visiting
Photo adapters to download pics- extra batteries
Small medicine bag that contains: anti-diarrhea meds, cold meds, Neosporin, band-aids stomach tabs like pepto bismal, advil and antacids
Use magazine perfume strips, in your checked luggage
Power Strip for electronics-adaptors-convertors-portable phone charges-
Copies of Passports, give to each other, and leave one of each at home with a family member, along with your itinerary
Misc:
Exchange your money at the airports, as opposed to your hotel. Better exchange rate
Your first point of entry, back into the States, will require you to go through Customs-paperwork will be given on plane, and its one per family
Turn Data OFF your smart phone before you board that plane
Avoid large gatherings once you reach your destination. This means, protests, etc.
Don't wear a bunch of flashy jewelry on the streets, it makes you a target
Call your Bank BEFORE you leave and let them know the dates and what country you are visiting
Print out Oanda currency exchange cheat sheet before you leave
Grab a business card from the hotel you are staying at, so when you are out and about, if you get lost or need a taxi and they don't speak English, you can just show the hotel biz card to the taxi driver
ALWAYS watch the flight board, when sitting at your gate. Gates do change and if you are not paying attention, you will miss your flight. I recommend on Domestic, check every half hour, on International I tend to check every 15 min or so…sometimes the new gate in not close to the old gate
Always lock up your Passports in the hotel safe, along with any devices, and expensive jewelry
Download the app VIATOR and you can use it to book excursions, or to just see what things you might be interested in seeing
A lot of restaurants will have the dish in their countries language, and then in English, or they may have an English menu
While in Europe, "American Coffee" is what you will need to ask for
If you drink sparkling water like I do, they have water with or with out "gas"
Try and learn a few key phrases before you leave for your trip…they appreciate the effort
