Happy Friday and hello from Arizona! Temperatures are finally dropping and we can’t wait to start up tours again in October. For now, we are enjoying the gorgeous desert, which is super green from all the monsoon rains. But don’t worry, October and November will be rain-free so you can ride in comfort 😎

Drop a ☀️ in the comments if you’ve ridden our Arizona Sonora tour before!

Meet Cole Wilson, our new Operations Manager at San Juan Kayak Expeditions. He has been on San Juan island since 2016, via Georgia after studying Outdoor Ed at Georgia College and completing a NOLS Wilderness First Responder course. In addition to guiding for Tim and Sally, the original owners of SJKE for four of those years, he was also a beer slinger at the brewery, worked for an excavation contractor, an arborist, and a local cannabis farm. Being a Cole-of-all-trades, combined with his formal education and passion for the outdoors makes him a great fit for this role. Come join Cole and his team for a half day, full day or multi-day kayak trip beginning May 1st. https://www.sanjuankayak.com/kayak-adventures

A warm welcome to our new Operations Manager, Kyle S at Bicycle Adventures. You'll find him in the shop and office at our headquarters in Redmond, WA answering phones, prepping gear for rides and planning his next ride. Kyle just received his Professional Engineering license and decided that he is more interested in working for an outdoor adventure company. Who can blame him? This is a photo of him on a beautiful ride he did along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia.

Need to get out of the house? We have winter options!

We had a wonderful time hanging out in the Methow Valley last week for our x-country ski trip! We skied, snowshoed and fat-tire biked. We’re so lucky to have this amazing place to visit in Washington. Everyone had a great time and we can’t wait to be back next winter!

Spring tours with Bicycle Adventures will be running as scheduled at this point. Read the update below.

Covid Update: We have some great tours coming up in the next few months and we’re excited to see our guests again! As we have been for the last year, we are monitoring the areas where we travel and adjusting as necessary based on local Covid restrictions. At this time, California has tight restrictions in place, which may affect our future Valley of Fire & Death Valley departures. We are currently waiting to see when our hotel in Death Valley will reopen.

At this point, we are planning to run our spring departures as scheduled. However, we are aware that guests may not have as much flexibility when it comes to travel plans. Our next Valley of Fire & Death Valley departure is February 28th - March 5th. If you are signed up for this date or thinking about a spring tour and would like a more solid option for travel, we have 2 great alternatives that you could take that week: Hawaii Big Island* and Arizona-Sonora. We’ll be taking new reservations and transfers to both of these tours up to February 20th. We also have dates for the Valley of Fire & Death Valley tour later in March as well as in the fall, beginning in October. There is no penalty for transferring to a different date.

Don’t hesitate to contact the office with any questions or to check in about a tour you are currently signed up for.

*Please note that for the Hawaii Big Island tour, you are required by the state of Hawaii to get a Covid test within 72 hours of landing on the Big Island. Without a negative test, you will need to complete the required 10-day quarantine on the island before being allowed to join the tour.

Looking for epic road cycling adventures? Look no further than Bicycle Adventures! New 2021 advanced tours available now!

We're starting our new tour highlights in the PNW with the Bend to Boise Epic:

Spin an epic route – not for the faint of leg – through miles of incredible scenery. And what better place to meet than in the athlete-and-brewpub mecca of Bend, Oregon?

Start pedaling in the otherworldly region of the Painted Hills and John Day Fossil Beds. Enjoy a century ride on the “Old West Scenic Bikeway”. Tackle the peaks, pine-forests and valleys of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. Relax, or go for another great ride, at Wallowa Lake. Ride Oregon’s famously quiet, smooth, bike-friendly roads through Eagle Cap Wilderness and the high pastures of central Idaho. Top it all off with a ride into Hells Canyon … and return home to tell the tale – wow!

We hit the road for this epic adventure on June 10th! For more information on this awesome trip, head to our website. www.bicycleadventures.com

Minutes from downtown Portland, Forest Park offers over 80 miles of exploration, including Leif Erikson Drive.

11 miles of twisty, glorious gravel and dirt.

The thick silty soil creates an entrancing hum under one’s tires. This particularly loose soil made Leif Erikson Drive very expensive to build in the early 1900’s and although its original intention was to expand residential development, yearly landslides made it clear how difficult and expensive living in these mountains would be.

Decades passed before Forest Park was established (ironically) to conserve the park so it may never be developed. 🙏

Rainy riding tips from Bicycle Adventures

Last week we shared some tips on how to accessorize for winter riding. Today, we want to focus on tips for riding in the rain!

Here in the PNW, rain is just part of life and riding in the rain is what you sign up for if you want to do any outdoor winter riding at all. So we’ve gotten pretty good at staying comfortable while adventuring in wet conditions. Here are a few tips for the rainy season.

1. Don’t try to stay dry. The fact of the matter is that if you’re riding for any duration of time in the rain, you’re going to get wet. Let go of trying to stay dry and instead focus on staying warm even when you get wet.

2. Layer up. Wear multiple layers to keep yourself warm and allow for mid-ride adjustments. A base layer, jersey, and jacket is a good starting point. Don’t forget your legs! A pair of winter bibs or rain pants that you can layer over your bibs will make a big difference.

3. Pick your materials carefully. Look for materials that will still keep you warm even when it’s wet. Merino wool is a heavy hitter in this department and makes a great next-to-skin layering option.

4. Use fenders. These obviously aren’t a layer you wear but they make a huge difference! Water spraying up from the road off of your tires can soak you, even if it’s not actively raining. Get your bike fitted with a pair of fenders to greatly reduce how drenched you get. There are many options out there for all kinds of bikes. We personally love the SKS Raceblades for the coverage and ease of installation.

Any favorite tips for staying warm and dry on winter rides? Drop them in the comments!

Welcome to The Adventure Hub!

There’s something about the Pacific Northwest that turns those of us lucky enough to live here into curious adventurers. It inspires us to get outside and experience the splendor of all the regions we visit. Though rooted in the PNW, we’ve traveled the world and continually discover destinations that remind us of home: majestic mountains, awe-inspiring waterfalls, placid lakes, the greenest landscapes, and the serenity of the great outdoors.

Now, as the pandemic has put most of our travel plans on hold, we’ve come together to shift our focus toward what we can do rather than what we can’t do. Let's explore, together!
