Remembering Prof. Jay Pasachoff

Remembering Jay. We met in 1980 when Jay was leading a tour to Hyderabad India. As luck would be the company that I was working for assigned me to accompany the tour and assist. We reconnected after I moved to USA. You opened many doors and opportunities for me. Getting me interested in Astronomy and developing a successful tourism business. You stood by me when I had to switch jobs, change business partnership and eventually starting my own business. Such was our bond and mutual admiration for each other. I admired your achievements in Astronomy and you my talent in organizing successful tours. A supportive bond that lasted several years and created memories of multiple and successful Astronomy tours. You contributed in many aspects and together we created wonderful eclipse sighting opportunities that participants appreciated and followed us on many tours and still continue. How am I going to fill this void?

I will mis you Jay. I promise to carry our association with Astronomy tours as much possible in future though knowing you will not be physically with me and support me. In spirit you will be and I will always seek your blessings. My heartfelt condolences to Naomi, Eloise, Deborah and family. Thank you Dr. Jay Pasachoff

I am saddened to announce the passing of Prof. Jay Pasachoff. Jay, Naomi and I met for the first time in 1980 when I had the opportunity to manage the Solar Eclipse tour he was leading to Hyderabad India. As the luck would have it I moved to United States and connected with Jay and Naomi again in 1994. Since 1995 we organized Solar Eclipse trips together each time and were looking forward to trips in 2023, 2024 and beyond. I will miss him dearly and so will many of our tour participants. It will be hard to fill up his void on future tours. My condolences to Naomi, Eloise, Deborah, and family.

May his soul rest in Peace. May god give his family strength to bear the loss.

The Eclipse fever has begun for 2021 in Chile inclusive of an Eclipse Flight over Antarctica, 2023 in Western Australia and 2024 in Mexico and Guatemala. Do not miss out on one of the most magnificent natural phenomena – Total Solar Eclipse. The visual effects as the Earth passes through the shadow on the Moon is a display of Nature’s brilliant spectacle, lasting but a few minutes. It is an opportunity to understand the sun and its properties including the Corona, the delicate periphery of outer atmosphere normally concealed by the star’s dazzling illumination. Ever been on a Total Eclipse Tour? Could it be, you have heard your friends/family members enthralled in witnessing a totality? Embark on a Total Solar Eclipse adventure with Madhukar “Mark” Sood and Professor Jay Pasachoff. The time is NOW to experience this Astronomical Exhibition – the gradual eclipse of the Sun.

1980 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE - our first Astronomy tour
Note from Journal of Birla Planetarium, Calcutta: published in 1980 (Editorial)

The foreign scientists had flown quite a few thousand miles and positioned themselves to take maximum advantage of this total solar eclipse which on the Indian scene had a maximum totality of 2m-52s in the Western coast. One observatory of our country had the unique privilege of being straight away under the path of totality and that was the Japal-Rangapur observatory of the Osmania University Hyderabad, India. Which is where our group observed the eclipse from.

2021 ANNULAR ECLIPSE GREENLAND + Iceland Extension
This is an unusual annular eclipse because at this time of year in the high Arctic the sun is above the horizon all day. Strange darkness at mid-day will be a most unusual sight, perhaps with interesting effects on the wildlife.
