There have only been 133 comments submitted so far on whether the Fish and Wildlife service should implement the 10 (J) rule designating the wolves being introduced as a non-essential experimental population. The deadline is August 22.

https://www.regulations.gov/document/FWS-R6-ES-2022-0100-0001

Anyone that hunts or hunted CO needs to leave a comment on why this introduction needs to be stopped!!!! The more comments the better, save hunting in CO, save wildlife in CO and stop the wolf!!!!

Booked between Dec 1 and June 10 (or 10 days after the primary draw results are posted by CPW) drop camp prices will be $1800/hunter and fully guided $5000/hunter . Booked after June 10 (or 10 days after the primary draw results are posted by CPW) drop camps will be $2200/hunter and fully guided will be $5500/hunter. We get asked on a lot of hunting trips or pack trips…. “Why do you guys use the canvas tarps and lash ropes?”

Well we have several reasons Mainly cause it makes us look cool, no not really the number 1 reason we use these is for your gear…. When we pack all of your hunting gear into panniers we want it to arrive safely. By throwing the canvas tarp over everything we have put the lid on, now ur gear is safer from tree branches, trees, rain, snow and brush.

Next the lash rope this helps the mules just as much as it is a lock. Depending on the load we use several different “hitches” to best benefit the animal and securing the load. “Squaw Hitches, basket Hitches, Single Diamonds, Double Diamonds, walkers hitch” all of these are great for different loads, weights and terrains. These hitches will secure ur load down in different spots and also lift the panniers up off your pack animals ribs. Making it more comfortable for your animal to breath while working. Some panniers have 1,2,3, or 5 straps to help secure a load, and you will see us using these straps around the top of the pack saddle to help pull weight forwards or backwards on the animal. We will still use a manty tarp and lash on packs unless we’re packing meat.

Lash ropes and manty tarps also help to secure awkward items, like bow cases, barrels, drums, etc. as well as loose items…. Ever gotten to camp and that boot you stuffed in the pannier to even the weight was gone?? Ya we want to avoid that as much as possible, freak rain storm in summer and ur army duffel bag is soaked with all ur clothes, huge rip in ur sleeping bag from catching on a low hanging branch. We lash and manty tarp to try and avoid these issues.

Now the last reason, have you ever heard the horror story of the guy who went packing up the trail then comes walking out behind his animal with gear strewn through the forest? Well if we ever have an accident, and oh ya we have before we’re not perfect. But having everything tied down, and tarped helps keep it all together so hopefully if it does happen when we get back down to the trailer ur gear is still nicely wrapped up and tied up.

We know it may take us a little extra time, you guys wanna get on the trail and up or down the mountain, but we are doing this for you and your gear. We want to take the best care we can of your gear while it is in our possession, and 99 times outa 100 it’s gonna look like we’re doing it just to be cool. But that 1 time, we may save ur gun in the case, ur bow in the case, spotting scope, clothes dry, sleeping bag in 1 piece, keep all ur boots together…. And it’s making it easier on our pack animals by helping situate the load and allowing them to breath.

If anyone has any questions about doing it and what hitches we throw the most or how
We do it let us know we will try to do a video for ya!!

O
And BTW the video Going around of the guy that makes it look like he lashes a load in about 10 seconds…. Is just for show the ropes are supposed to be tight and lifting

06/17/2022

Have you ever called and wondered why we are closed some days to ”pack salt”? Well we assist the Coal Basin Cattleman’s association with putting salt blocks out on the mountain for the cattle. These salt blocks help us keep cattle in certain areas to graze on the free range until the permit time is up. Salt blocks weigh 50LBS each and one of our mules will carry 5 starting out, each time we drop a block they shed 50LBS. This also helps us keep our mules in shape for later in the packing season. These permit times are set by a USFS official, we are only allowed to have X amount of cattle on the mountain, on each area for X amount of time. Another local rider (and sometimes guests if they’re lucky enough) ride the trails and move the cattle back to where they need to be if they’ve wandered off. These pictures had Michael out with the “range rider” Norm, and Carl packing 500lbs salt into the dry one area where we will put cows June 25 (sorry folks were closed june 25) enjoy the pics and in the future we may offer “salt packing days” to clients but it’s not a normal trail ride and requires semi experienced riders as some days can be 6 hours.

From the Horse Mouth:
What should i wear on my horseback ride?
Most horseback riding outfitters have their suggested clothing for riding, and a lot of them are pretty close to the same. Lets start with the suggested clothing, then we will go through the suggested not to wear.
Suggested Clothing:
Well fitting hat, make sure it can stay on with the wind, or helmet (8-13 Yr olds required to wear helmets, you can bring your own), we've chased several hats down the mountain blowing off in the wind, and also its a safety hazard as it can blow off and spook a horse.
long sleeve shirts: long sleeve shirts have several benefits, they protect you from the intense UV rays at this elevation, can protect you from brush and branches that may be on the trail
Long Pants: same as a long sleeve shirt but it also protects from the leather saddle rubbing your legs
Footwear: hiking boots, cowboy boots or tennis shoes, suggested to have a shoe with a small heel to assist with keeping your foot in the stirrup properly.
Suggested things to bring with you:
Chap Stick, Sunscreen, Water bottle, sunglasses,

Here is the Do Not Wear list, you can but we'd highly suggest against it, and yes if its on this list we've seen people try to ride in them
Footwear: Sandals, high heels, crocs, open toed shoes, dress shoes, glove shoes,
Clothing: Mini Skirts, dresses, shorts, "daisy dukes", loose fitting hats, heavy backpacks,
Also no matter how experienced you are don't bring your spurs or own saddle, most places have saddles and pads that fit each horse, but check with your outfitter about bringing your own saddle on longer overnight trips.

Our saddles have small saddle horn bags for you to put small items in such as your phones, wallets, water bottles, ETC.

Redstone Spotlight:
Redstone Community Association
Have you heard about the Redstone Community Association (RCA)? Whether you are a visitor or a community member the RCA is the lifeblood for community events in Redstone. The RCA is made up of community board members that meets on the first tuesday of each month at 6PM (season depending), these meetings are open to EVERYONE. Meetings are posted on the RCA website (Redstonecolorado.com) and monthly in the Crystal Valley Echo. The RCA is a donation funded entity that works for the community, with all their board and helpers volunteers the RCA is always looking for some help or a little donation. RCA is who puts on the Redstone Easter Egg Hunt, 4th of July Parade, Grand Illumination. They also are in charge of the Rubber Duck Derby on 4th of july, kids bike decorating, the Redstone Hwy cleanup, and decorating the boulevard. The RCA is always accepting donations to put towards these events, every little bit helps to make these events better and many events are focused at the kids of the community (although all kids are welcome to any of the activities). They are also always accepting new board members to bring more insight to the Association. Whether you're a community member or a visitor we hope you can help the RCA either by donating to their non-profit for the community or jumping on the board. Give them some feedback at a meeting or even comment on this post and we will get it sent to the RCA so they can see it personally and take any advice or ideas into account. Next RCA meeting is May 3 at 6PM at the Redstone Inn.

Any parents got a rascal of a teenager in need of a summer job? Or any you teenagers need the house to yourself? Heres an option to get your mom or dad, or both out of your hair, and somebody’s getting paid to be here.

We are looking for a part time ranch hand for a couple hours a day, a couple days of the week starting now till Mid August.

Main duties:

Fixing fence
Irrigation ditch clearing
General ranch cleanup

If you don’t know how to do any of that, or how to ride a horse, THATS ok. We will teach you.

As a bonus for hard workers, we will take you out on some free trail rides, and other cool possibilities throughout the summer (horseback camping trips, trail riding in the Snowmass Maroon Bells Wilderness, helping the Cattlemens association with cattle work, etc…)

Lunch is provided if you want, or bring your own. We have a fridge you can put stuff in.

This is just for the summer however if your interested in a full time job with housing we’re looking for one of those too!

Hunt Talk:
Shot Placement
The long debated idea of proper shot placement and how to achieve best results at an harvest. We will go over each "shot" and give the good and the bad of each shot. We will put recommended shots for both Archery and Rifle. We always suggest being ready for a follow up shot and any animal that "drops in its tracks" should get a follow up shot or watched for several minutes before celebration. Typically, if an animal is only stunned it will get up and run immediately not giving you a second chance. Whether it was needed or not, you'd be happier with an extra bullet vs a lost and wounded animal. Disclaimer, you as a hunter can shoot anywhere you want, and take any shot you want we are just giving you the information from prior experience on these shots to make the most educated decision on placement. All shots should be further researched before taken in the field.

Lets start at the Front with
Head Shots (Rifle Only): The famous head shot, drop them in their tracks. Now this shot is a hard one you want a steady rest and a short distance. We suggest as a last resort shot and not on your bull or buck if you want to keep those antlers attached. You're only going to have a shot area of roughly 6"X5" placement in either direction is either going to boast a miss or shot in the nasal cavity and a long agonizing tracking job usually leaving a wounded animal on the mountain to die.

Neck Shots (Rifle Only): Neck shots can be great and drop an animal in its tracks but if you miss the spine or Carotid artery, you're just wounding an animal. The shock wave from the bullet is what assists you in harvesting the animal. A definite follow up shot is highly suggested, as a stunned animal can get up and run at any time.

Frontal Shot (Rifle, Bow): The frontal shot taken correctly can be devastating, with a rifle taking the shot is relatively simple and shooting center mass of the body area will yield tremendous results. With a bow proper placement is slightly left or slightly right of the wind pipe. But to far left or right can send the arrow between the rib cage and shoulder where no vitals would be hit. Goal for archery is to hit either a Carotid artery or the heart.

Shoulder Shot (Rifle or Bow): We don't really suggest shooting through the shoulder with a rifle and definitely not suggested with a bow as shooting through the shoulder blade can cause arrow, or broadhead failure. But the shoulder shot is commonly incorrect as the skeletal structure is a bit different than most believe, as the front leg does not go straight up to the shoulder but kicks forward then back agakn. A rifle can break bone and take the animal down, but if you don't hit both shoulders you're only taking out one leg, and missing a lot of vitals. You're also going to be wasting a lot of meat with this shot, and honestly what are we here for? So we don't suggest this shot, even blood shot meat is still supposed to be packed out per CPW laws.

Spine Shots (Rifle): Obviously, we don't suggest spine shots with a rifle or bow but especially not a bow. Did you know there is 3-4" of Spinous Process Bone above the vertebrae? So do you know exactly where to aim to hit the spine? How about taking out those beautiful back strap steaks? This is also where that "void or no mans land" comes into play.

Shooting Broadside shots (Rifle and Bow): This should be your go to, perfectly broadside or quartering away, the largest area to shoot and largest area for error. Your only block could be ribs and many calibers and arrows shouldn't having a problem blowing through those. Heart, Lungs, and liver at the worst all yield dead animals. When taking longer shots this is the only option. The largest area for shot placement and most forgiving for error, the only thing that would be destroyed meat wise is the heart. Be a bit cautious with quartering to shots especially with a bow. the best shot is directly up the front leg and center body mass. But you may lose some meat so just a bit back is the best.

Now lets ruffle some feathers. The "Void or No mans land" in an animals rib cage, it does not exist. a live animals chest cavity does not have any voids in it, the lungs fill all the empty space, this is why when you breath or an animal breathes you can see the movement in the ribs. If there was a "void" that area would give the lungs room to contract and expand which then the lungs wouldn't expand the rib cage. The "void" is the highest part in the rib cage and when an animal is shot in the it void takes the longest for the lungs and chest cavity to fill with blood thus taking the longest for a blood trail to show as blood can't pour out of the wound like a lower shot. If you tell us you hit the void we're going to tell you to keep tracking cause you killed the animal, its just going to take time for the trail to show.

Check the images below for elk vitals and remember to research the animal you are trying to harvest as some animals are different like black bears.

From the Horses Mouth:
Why can't we Trot, Gallop or Run on our trail ride, even if we are experienced?
We take pride in providing you with the best horseback riding experience we can, we also want you to come back time after time.
So why don't we allow Trotting, Galloping or Running while on our rides, the easiest answer is insurance. But to get more technical we have safety as our top priority, both for you AND our horses. Our horses are our family and we take great pride in having trustworthy healthy horses for you to experience our rides on. The terrain we have is not consistent, there are gopher holes, rocks, uneven footing, logs, branches, mud, uphill and downhill. All these in combination makes a huge obstacle course of things for the horses to navigate, although our horses are used to the terrain navigating at a faster speed than a walk is dangerous to both you and the horse. Horses are agile and a quick turn left or right can send you tumbling, or have you ever seen in the movies when a horse goes under a low branch and knocks the rider off? It can happen and we don't want it to. Most accidents happen at a trot or gallop when the rider is inexperienced or cannot properly ride at that speed, for the safety of the entire group we keep things at a walk.
We also like to be able for you to enjoy the ride, sitting back and relaxing at a walk makes it easier for you to see the scenery, listen to your guide and have the safest ride possible.
So regardless of past experience we keep everyone at a walk, we ask that you follow our rules for our horses safety and not try to get the horses to trot or gallop, they'll appreciate you a lot more.

A 1983 Dream by Lisa Wagner turned into a reality in 1995 showcasing her love for Colorado, California, Hawaii and the Ocean. A dream come true on the Crystal River creating the Crystal Dreams Bed and Breakfast. Lisa has put her heart and soul into Redstone, CO and even more into this Country Victorian Style B&B. Take relaxation to a whole new level with the Crystal River just steps from the backdoor, two 2nd floor rooms give you the choice of the Moon River Room with a king size bed, best suited for couples of all ages or the Mt Casa Room boasting a queen sized bed and an additional twin bed. The common areas of this property are open for use to all guests, including the dining room, living room and outdoor areas. Want maximum relaxation? Take a body fusion class or Yoga with Lisa as she is a certified instructor. Lisa also puts on the Redstone Magical Moments Summer Concert Series at the Redstone Stables every Saturday 6-8PM beginning June 25, 2022. Competitive rates for each room are $185-$195 during Peak Summer time (May 15- Dec 31) and includes a wonderful candle lit breakfast prepared by Lisa. The Crystal Dreams B&B also hosts the La Femme Spa which we will be showcasing at a later date on our Redstone Spotlight.
