My name is Jayne Roth. As a former graphic artist in the retail world, I now embrace the challenge of exploring the third-dimension. Toying with jewelry creations in my spare time for several years, I eventually evolved into a full-time jewelry artist, specializing in work fabricated in .960 and .999 silver metal clay. My pieces are combined with complementary mixed media and patinated to evoke a

vintage aura. In addition to exhibiting and selling my work in art and jewelry shows, I offer workshops, demonstrating the ease of creating unique and beautiful silver jewelry while using non-traditional materials and simplified jewelry-making techniques. This earring was created for a client who saw my work at the gallery and requested a custom singular earring be made for him. After receiving the piece, he wrote this poem in honor of the symbolism. I find his words touching and hence I share.

Spades (2022-01-16: #686)

Spades are used to move small amounts of earth:
For “medium tuning” of a garden.
Not for altering an entire landscape—
Not for tiniest modifications—
But for certain tasks like reshaping beds.
Reshaping beds to rearrange colors,
Or to modify the seasonal blooms,
Or simply change visual appearance
From the window I peer out while cooking.
What we see can change what we think and feel.
Even small-seeming changes can change lives.
Bringing order like the earring’s straight line
Or randomness like the earrings ovals.
Changes are sometimes anticipated—
Other times change cannot be predicted.
Having the spade on a post in my ear
Near my mind keeps that wisdom close to me.
Reminding me to be open to change.
