Jimmy Carter served as the 39th president of the United States. Prior to that, he served as the governor of Georgia and in the Georgia State Senate. Born and raised in Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946 and joined the United States Navy's submarine service. As president, Carter successfully pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the Soviet Union. He signed into law bills that established the United States Departments of Energy and Education. After his presidential term, he established the Carter Center to promote and expand human rights, and he received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for this work. He conducted peace negotiations, monitored elections, and worked to eradicate infectious diseases. He was a key figure in the nonprofit housing organization Habitat for Humanity. And he wrote numerous books, ranging from political memoirs to poetry. He died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, and today, January 9, is a National Day of Mourning in his honor.
