Statement of Virginia Petroleum and Convenience Marketers Association President Michael J. O'Connor

June 15, 2022

"VPCMA supports the policy of temporarily suspending the state mandated motor fuel taxes. The Association recognizes that all Virginians are subject to an unprecedented volatile market where wholesale prices of motor fuels are unpredictable from day to day. The Association has no control over the prices for motor fuels that charged to its members by their suppliers. In addition the association does not become involved in the decision its members make regarding the retail prices for the motor fuels they sell. Notwithstanding those facts, the Association hopes and expects that a suspension of the state motor fuels taxes will offer some relief to consumers."

Matt Strickler, VA's last Secretary of Natural Resources was a member of the Democratic staff on Capitol Hill for the US House Natural Resources Committee right before joining the Northam administration. After three years, he departed Richmond last September and is now Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Biden Interior Department.

Virginia's Governor elect has nominated as the next Secretary of Natural Resources Andrew Wheeler, who was EPA administrator for part of the Trump Administration.

Can someone explain to us the difference?

According to VPAP so far in 2021, the VIRGINIA LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS PAC has received over $2,360,000 in PAC contributions from its Mother Ship. Who gave all this money? We will never know because the League of Conservation Voters will not reveal it. Our modest PAC lists all of our contributors.

Its past time for the VIRGINIA LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTEERS to end its legacy of dark money deals.

U.S. Senator John Warner 1927-2021

In 2007, a delegation of members travelled to Washington to meet with our federal officials on pending bills to recognize Virginia Native American tribes. During consideration of the legislation it was a very real possibility that amendments would be added to tribal members and their supporters to sell to***co products to the general public on reservations without charging state and federal taxes. During the day of our visit Senator John Warner was chairing an important hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on the Iraq war, but came off the dais and into an adjoining meeting room to meet with our delegation. After the members described the issue and our concerns relative to tax evasion, he paused and said “Boys, I guarantee you that will never happen so long as I am in the US Senate. It was great seeing you today, but now I have to get back to this war.” They don’t make them like John Warner anymore.

Virginia and states from the Gulf Coast to New Jersey are addressing a petroleum shortage caused by internet hackers last Friday. After careful evaluation and despite the great efforts of our Governor and his staff which will substantially lessen the impacts of this shutdown by international criminals, it is now clear that supplies of gasoline and diesel in Virginia will be significantly impacted in the near term. We look forward to Colonial Pipeline's announcement tomorrow as to when pipeline supply will be restored
