More fun with the new camera in the yard! πŸ˜ƒ
This is a young male Broad-billed Hummingbird feeding on a native Mexican Bird of Paradise flower (not to be confused with the one everyone calls Mexican Bird of Paradise, which is really a non-native Red Bird of Paradise),

I finally bit the bullet and bought a new camera! It's a Canon R7 (mirrorless) with a Canon RF 100-500 lens. I tried it out for the first time this morning, while helping Jennie with her Desert Purple Martin study. Not bad, I think I'll get the hang of it... 😎

Another amazing experience with Golden Eagles in Box Canyon today! 😎
This time, the pair flew over as we arrived and landed on a rocky outcrop as close as Golden Eagles ever dare come. These photos are "digiscoped" (taken with a cell phone looking through a spotting scope) so are probably about 100x magnification, but that's still pretty close for this normally shy species.

I enjoyed this little photoshoot with a stunning Black-throated Sparrow at Gates Pass in Tucson a couple of weeks ago 😎

Some days you hike up and down the mountain and don't even hear one. Just occasionally, there's a showy one in the parking lot. Yesterday was one of those days! 😎

Everyone loves owls! πŸ¦‰
I was with two night tours for the Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival, at California Gulch and Ramsey Canyon. We had encounters with the world's smallest owl, Elf Owl, as well as Western and Whiskered Screech-Owls. We even had a brief but thrilling flyby from a Spotted Owl at one point! 😎

I've had great fun the past four days leading tours for the excellent Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival. One highlight was finding this rare Green Rat Snake in Santa Cruz County, only the fourth one I've ever seen 😎

Without particularly targeting them, we had an insane raptor day in SE Arizona. Not the greatest photos, but a pretty good list: American Kestrel, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Gray Hawk, Zone-tailed Hawk, Common Black Hawk, Osprey, Golden Eagle and Crested Caracara! And I'm throwing in non-raptors Turkey Vulture and Black Vulture, just because. πŸ˜ƒ

Exciting encounter with a Golden Eagle in Box Canyon today! It flew right over us carrying prey, which I think was a Rock Squirrel. Pretty cool! 😎 (unless you're the squirrel)

It's hawk watch time down in Tubac! I've had a couple of great days hanging out with clients and friends, and watching raptors migrating north along the Santa Cruz Valley.
The big prize is Common Black Hawk, and we saw plenty, but we've also seen Zone-tailed and Gray Hawks, as well as a bunch of other cool stuff.
The hawk watch has really grown! A decade ago it was just a handful of us bird nerds standing on the bridge - look at us now!

Digiscoping!

(Having thought about it for a while, this post is mainly in praise of my new Kowa scope, so maybe that should be the title!)

I first tried "digiscoping" - taking photos of birds through a telescope - in the late 90s, using a camcorder which I attached to my old scope with a bracket that a friend had made. I took still frames from the video I shot, and was very proud of the small and incredibly fuzzy images I was producing!

Almost 25 years later, I'm now able to get images that, for some distant subjects in particular, are better than my regular DSLR camera can manage, just by hand-holding my phone up the scope eyepiece.

A professional photographer once told me "never mind the pixels, it's all about the glass" and they were right - my phone isn't high end or new (Google Pixel 5a) but the scope is fabulous (Kowa TSN88), and really makes these shots.
