October 27, 2018 killer whale encounter by kayak
October 27, 2018: Kayak guide Ryder was at our Roche Harbor kayak dock doing end of season clean up when he overheard vague information about possible humpback whales inside of the marina. Intrigued by this extremely rare (and unlikely) sighting, he hopped in a kayak with one mission:
Find these whales!
After searching the marina and the waters outside of the harbor, success! Ryder encountered the small group of Bigg’s killer that we are calling “the kiddos,” which is made up of three juvenile and young adult whales on a walk-about in the Salish Sea away from their family pods.
This is a video of Ryder's encounter from his kayak outside of the Roche Harbor marina in Speiden Channel.

We’ve had exceptional tours on the water in recent weeks. Many of our guided kayak tours have encountered humpbacks and both Bigg’s mammal-hunting orcas or members of the Southern Resident Killer Whale Community.

.
On this day, these Bigg’s killer whales surprised everyone! This pod eventually traveled south along the west side of Henry Island giving both our 3- and 5-hour guided kayak tours a great encounter.

Safari Island in the San Juan Islands
Spieden Island has a very interesting history!
Spieden Island was named by Charles Wilkes during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838-1842.
In the 1970s, two taxidermist brothers purchased the island, imported several species of exotic animals and birds from around the world, and invited hunters to fly in and pay for the privilege of hunting.
Local outrage caught the attention of Walter Cronkite, a TV newsman, who produced a nationally-televised program that ultimately forced the brothers out of business for their inhumane treatment of the animals.
Today, the exotic animals can still be sighted on Spieden Island and include mouflon sheep from Corsica, fallow deer from Europe, and Sika deer from Asia were imported to the island.
