U.S.-based employers announced 57,727 cuts in November, a 3.8% increase from the 55,597 cuts announced one month prior. It is up 26.8% from the 45,510 cuts announced in the same month in 2023 per the November Job Cuts report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.,

The Automotive sector announced the most job cuts in November with 11,506, the highest monthly total since 14,373 cuts were recorded in April. For the year, Automotive companies have announced 45,820, a 59% increase from the 28,803 cuts recorded through November last year.

The Automotive industry is currently experiencing significant challenges, including potential tariffs affecting U.S. automakers with overseas factories, intensifying competition from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, and shifts in government subsidies for EVs. Additionally, leadership changes, such as the recent resignation of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, are contributing to the sector’s volatility.

SHRM reported today - Inflation Inched Up in October

Annual inflation has inched up, according to new data released today, the first time the inflation rate has jumped up in months after a steady stream of decreases.

The consumer price index (CPI) for all items rose 2.6% for the 12 months ending in October, before seasonal adjustment, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. That’s up from the 2.4% year-over-year increase notched in September. On a monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.2%, seasonally adjusted, the same increase as the previous three months.

Real average hourly earnings increased 1.4%, seasonally adjusted, from October 2023 to October 2024, the BLS reported separately.

Employer Takeaway: Justin Ladner, senior labor economist at SHRM, said the halt in the steady fall in inflation in recent months appears to have been driven by rising prices in a few categories, including transportation and medical costs. Largely, though, he said, the rise won’t make a big mark—at least not yet.

Over the remainder of 2024, it would be unsurprising if inflation stagnated or fell much more slowly than in past months, in part because the Fed is expected to continue its policy of gradually lowering interest rates,” Ladner said. “Given that inflation is already low by historical standards, this development has limited implications for consumers and businesses.”

October Job Gains Come Up Short reported by SHRM

U.S. employers added just 12,000 new jobs in October, far less than what most economists had expected, according to the latest employment report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report, released Nov. 1, likely reflects the impact of two devastating hurricanes, along with strikes at Boeing and ports on the East Coast, all of which economists said could have reduced employment growth by over 100,000 jobs during the survey period.

Hiring has been decelerating all year, but despite the pressures of inflation and high interest rates, the labor market has remained resilient, and the Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates again next week.

The unemployment rate in October held at 4.1%. Claims for unemployment benefits have increased slightly over the past year but remain relatively stable, and layoffs have been muted.

Employer takeaway: Much of the decline in job growth appears to have been driven by the ongoing Boeing strike and potentially the significant impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, explained Justin Ladner, senior labor economist at SHRM.

“Job growth remained strong in health care and government, and the unemployment rate held steady. Furthermore, labor market evidence from earlier this week continues to suggest that the overall labor market remains strong, ” Ladner said. “From a policy perspective, there was already widespread belief that the Fed will pursue a series of gradual interest rate cuts in the remainder of 2024 and throughout 2025, and this latest report should only reinforce that policy.”

As U.S. Businesses look ahead to the close of 2024, hiring expectations reveal a mixed but cautiously optimistic landscape. According to the October 2024 Business Conditions Survey from the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), 23% of firms plan to add employees in the coming quarter, while the majority—60%—foresee no change in staffing levels.

Notably, very few companies are delaying hiring. Instead, concerns around inflation top the list of factors shaping workforce and investment decisions.

This survey sheds light on how firms are navigating labor market trends, inflation pressures, and moderate recession risks as they plan for 2025 and beyond.

Find out what’s next for hiring, wages, and investment as companies navigate the final months of the year. Read the article below.

Few are delaying staffing and investment decisions because of uncertainty over the US presidential election.

Workforce Attrition Trends: What Employers Need to Know for 2025

As we close out 2024, the latest data from Eagle Hill Consulting reveals a complex landscape for employee retention. While attrition rates have dropped, early indicators suggest a wave of departures may hit in early 2025—especially among Generation Z and female employees.

This is a wake-up call for employers to double down on engagement and retention strategies, particularly around culture, flexibility, and career development. Now is the time to focus on strategic initiatives to retain top talent and address emerging workforce needs.

After several quarters of declining attrition, Eagle Hill says more workers may leave their jobs in early 2025.
