Schooner American Eagle

Schooner American Eagle Join us aboard the Schooner American Eagle, and experience the Maine coast aboard a piece of living history.
(26)

Offering 3 to 9-night all-inclusive sailing trips around Penobscot Bay and beyond. The Schooner American Eagle is a deep draft vessel, originally designed to work offshore in all kinds of weather. Today, her hull and efficient rig continue to make her safe and stable when sailing along the coast or in open water, and with an inboard engine, she can move from place to place with or without any wind

! The layout below is traditional with the galley up forward and main cabin aft, providing two comfortable salons in which to gather below decks. Her cabins are a mix of cozy bunks or double beds, giving our guests options when requesting their sleeping arrangements. Although our menu changes with each trip we take, there is always plenty of delicious food to be enjoyed, and we strive to accommodate any dietary needs or allergies you may have. Additionally, one meal per trip is a dedicated lobster bake with freshly-caught and prepared lobster, sweet Maine corn, and other culinary delights. Please visit our website to learn more about the schooner and to request a brochure!

A couple of nights ago while working on the hawse pipe, Captain Tyler was able to capture some incredible pictures of the aurora borealis over the American Eagle while we’re hauled out at the North End Shipyard.

According to NOAA this was the most powerful geomagnetic storm in the past 20 years, with aurora sitings all over the world for the past few days.

Even when we’re busy during haul out, we love to take a second to capture these special moments 📷

We just had a cabin open up for our Great Schooner Race trip. Join us for 4 nights of sailing Penobscot Bay followed up with the Great Schooner Race. You might even want to help our seine boat team retain our championship from last year's small boats race.

Friends of the schooner and local photographers Sheppard and Sheppard will be joining us this trip to lead a photography workshop on not only capturing exciting photos of the race, but also the beauty of our home sailing grounds.

Visit our website or give us a call to book!

The first photo was taken by Sheppard and the second Sheppard

Whether it’s reading aloud to share stories about Maine, staying awake during night watch, or learning more about the fascinating history of Maine and our fishing schooner, we love the way books can entertain and educate 📖

For World Book Day we thought we should share some important books to the schooner.

E.B. White’s One Man’s Meat is full of great short stories about living on a saltwater farm in Brooklin ME on the shores of Blue Hill Bay 🦪

Down to the Sea, written by Gloucester historian Joseph Garland tells the story of the Gloucester fishing schooner from the evolution of design to what life was like dory trawling on the Grand Banks. 🎣

Naval historian Howard Chapelle’s The American Fishing Schooner is a much longer and detailed history of the fishing schooner. ⛵️

If you want any of these books make sure to get them from a local book store, or you can wait for the summer and read a copy from our little library aboard on a cruise out on the bay.

The American Eagle hauled out on the Rocky Neck Marine Railway in Gloucester sometime in the early 1940's.

This beautiful photograph captures the then “Andrew and Rosalie” in a time of transition; still rigged for dory trawling, but with her bowsprit sawn off to mark the end of her sword fishing career.

Soon after this photo was taken her name was changed to “American Eagle” before being completely rerigged as a more “modern” eastern rig dragger.

Our beloved vessel has had to adapt in many ways to survive the changes of time and industry. We are so thankful that her current occupation keeps her in such fine trim through the continued efforts and adoration from our family, guests and crew.

We couldn't get enough of Marty's halibut ceviche last year!

The mild flavor of halibut is beautifully complimented by the citrus marinade, best scooped up with a crunchy tortilla chip.

The season for local caught halibut is quite short, so we greatly enjoy the local catch during the summer.

On National Sibling Day we would like to celebrate the dynamic duo that powers our season: Wind and Sail! 💨⛵️

Together they propel the American Eagle through the waters of Penobscot Bay and beyond, creating moments of sailing magic.

Don't worry, we also celebrate such duos as lobster and butter and blueberry pie and whipped cream. What's your favorite duo on the schooner?

We are honored that Windows to the Wild's "Coastal Trek" episode has been nominated for a New England Emmy.

It was an absolute pleasure to have Willem and his crew join us for our Hidden Traces of the Past trip in 2022. A big thanks is also due to Sam Collins for guiding us through the fascinating history of our home sailing grounds, Penobscot Bay.

If you are interested in watching this episode, it is available for free and linked in the post below.

Ding Ding Ding! 🔔

It's almost that time... No not dinner, time to sail!

We're only two months away from the first windjammer fleet meet-up of the season, the Schooner Gam. The Gam is an opportunity for the whole Maine Windjammer fleet to raft up for a night of music and fun. ⛵️

We'll be joined once again by Reese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band for five nights of sailing around beautiful Penobscot Bay. We only have a couple cabins left, so don't miss out! 🌲

We are full steam ahead as we enter fit-out season: paint brushes are flying, sanders humming, saws whirring...

Things probably felt similar when this picture from the rebuild of the American Eagle was taken some time in 1985 or early 1986 as they prepared for the Eagle's first season windjamming.

This picture comes from the Penobscot Marine Museum’s archives

There's no better way to start your day than with a good ol' fashioned schooner workout; hauling up the sails.

There are many ways to finish hauling, the traditional "two-six-heave," the comedic "chicken SOUP! Fish SOUP! Stone SOUP," Kate and Courtney's favorite "Zoo-Wee-Momma!" and many others.

What's your favorite call-out for raising the sails?

Ready, set, GO!

It's a race... to the last cabin on our Great Schooner Race trip.

Join us aboard the American Eagle as we try to repeat our success last year in the 2024 Great Schooner Race. Only one cabin is left for the trip, so don't miss out on a classic windjamming trip capped off with a series of races where the fun, camaraderie, and sportsmanship never end.

Sean Sheppard and Tracy Sheppard will be joining us for a photography workshop on this trip. Don't miss out on one of the best opportunities to learn and shoot photos as we jockey with the other schooner for first place.

Just the thing to do on a lazy afternoon reachin’ up the bay.

Join us for a cruise this summer and enjoy the pleasantly warm Maine sun and not-too-cool-but-just-right ocean breeze as we sail around Penobscot Bay.

Rumor has it that the Schooner American Eagle is the fastest boat from Eastport, Maine all the way down to Gloucester, Mass—at least
our two victories in the Great Schooner Race and the Esperanto Cup seem to confirm it! 🏁

The wind in our sails, the thrill of competition, it’s one of those things that makes us love sailing. ⛵️

Happy 204th birthday to the great state of Maine!

In honor of our beautiful home state we thought we would post the "most Maine" photo in our library. A lighthouse, a lobster, a windjammer, a warm cable-knit sweater, and an overcast day on Penobscot Bay.

Other than a can of Moxie, what other Maine icons are we missing?

Happy Pi Day!

While it's not yet a bank holiday yet, Pi Day is a big deal to us. We spend the summer baking pies like mad, from strawberry rhubarb in the early summer to wild Maine blueberry in July and August and apple in the fall--we can't get enough (especially when there's fresh whipped cream involved).

In honor of this holiday Nate baked a very Downeast pie from : wild Maine blueberry (frozen during the winter) flavored with a Moxie soda syrup. We love this blueberry pie with a hint of Moxie!

What's your favorite pie to eat on the schooner?

We're very excited to announce a new trip in our schedule for 2024. After having such a great time as part of the Schooner Gam in 2023, duo Drank the Gold will be joining us on a misty sojourn through the isles of Penobscot Bay this September 20th through the 24th. Watch the foliage change during the day and in the evening cozy up in our wood-paneled galley to a concert of Celtic melodies.

Read about our new trip and more in our February newsletter!

Penobscot Bay is dotted with hundreds of uninhabited islands, waiting to be explored.

Comb shell-covered beaches looking for the perfect
periwinkle, or search for the remains of an old rusticator cabin fading back into the forest. You might not even make it past the raspberry bushes that always seem to grow along the hiking trails.

What’s your favorite island to visit?

Before her life as a cozy windjammer, the Schooner American Eagle fished for over 50 years as part of Gloucester's fishing fleet. Year-round she worked catching fish

In this photo taken in 1977 she sits at the dock in Gloucester, waiting to go out to catch fish. By this point in her life she had been converted from a fishing schooner to an "eastern-rig" dragger.

Built as part of the Schooner American Eagle's rebuild into a windjammer, the seine boat is our main method of transporting guests on and off the schooner.

The Eagle would have carried a similar boat from around 1930 to 1945 while seine fishing for school fish like herring and mackerel during the summer.

Would you rather row or supervise when it's your turn in the seine boat?

Our Whitehall is an important member of the schooner's small boat fleet, whether we need to deliver lobster bake supplies to an uninhabited beach or take a nice post-sail row around one of Penobscot Bays beautiful anchorages.

Known as "bicyles of the sea" Whitehalls were built as a popular recreational rowboats in the early 20th century, popular for their stability and straight tracking.

Where's your favorite place to go for a row after a day of sailing?

There are over 60 historic lighthouses that dot the Maine coast, built to guide sailors such as ourselves to safe harbor. We see, and occasionally hear, many of these over the course of a sailing season.

The need to be seen means the lighthouses stand out from their setting on the beautiful and rugged Maine coast, making for beautiful photo opportunities.

What is your favorite lighthouse in Maine to see from the water?

Pictured below are two of our favorite lighthouses: the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on the edge of Mount Desert Island and the Moose Peak Light located on Mistake Island near Jonesport.

Immerse yourself in martime melodies! Listen to the arrhythmic chime of a distant bell buoy, or feel the rumble and hear the clatter of the chain following the anchor. ⛓

Plug in, turn up the volume, and let the sounds of sailing transport you to the heart of the sea. ⛵️

Dreaming of fresh fish chowder and warm buttermilk biscuits on overcast winter days like today. It is hard to believe that we're only four months from the first of many bowls of chowder this summer.

What is your favorite food to eat while sailing?

Fresh Gulf of Maine Haddock $7.99lb all week!
