As the temperature is reaching some fridged lows this week in Rockland, we are cheered and inspired by the knowledge that soon we will be back in the warm galley setting the tables with delicious delicacies such as these scones! Are you looking forward to hearing that bell ring again? We sure are!

This was a moment of friendly harbor ball with Schooner Lewis R. French as they prepared to depart. Either the breakfast muffins were a bit dense or Captain Noah’s oar was just not quite up to the challenge!

We did it. We blinked twice and it’s all over!

October brings with it the close of our sailing season, but it also heralds a whole new season of down-rig and maintenance.

Heritage is already buttoned up for the winter. All the working components have been taken off board and the cover is in place. The winter coats of pine tar have been applied and every morning there are fewer and fewer boats as we look out towards the harbor.

Be sure to keep your eyes open for future posts as we start to look back on our 2024 sailing season. What a fantastic year it was with so many memorable moments shared with all of you!

Exciting news folks! 📣
We just had an opportunity open up to get on our
August 3rd~7th Perseid Meteor Shower trip!

What can you expect on this trip? We’re glad you asked!

We will be out sailing the Penobscot Bay, enjoying the amazing views of the Maine coast, finding lighthouses and observing the wildlife (pssst…this week we saw whales!). As we travel along together we’ll be enjoying hearty and delicious home cooked meals prepared right on our wood burning stove and, of course, an all you can eat lobster bake ashore on an uninhabited Maine island.

In the evenings we will find secluded harbors to anchor in where the light pollution can’t find us. Then (weather permitting) we will spread out on deck as the sun sets and the stars come out and the watch for the meteors begins. At times the show is just stunning with each one spotted followed by ooos and aaas!

What could make an adventure aboard the Schooner Heritage even more memorable? How about an up close encounter with a couple humpback whales?

There have been a couple humpbacks sighted in and around the Penobscot Bay lately and we were fortunate enough to encounter them on a windless day. We drifted past each other, giving us nearly 20 minutes of awe and enjoyment!

It is nearly unheard of to see this in our area, so we feel so fortunate to have had this experience and we hope that this pair enjoys their time in Penobscot Bay and maybe even decides to hang out here for the summer. How cool would it be to see them throughout the sailing season?!

The Schooner Gam is just around the corner!

Hello and goodbye to another successful spring haul out! Our crew worked hard to take advantage of a very brief window of good weather to recondition the bottom sides and prepare her for another season of sailing.
And may we take a moment to appreciate the beauty and elegance of form that Heritage generally hides below the water line? It’s a side of her that is not often presented, but is just as artistic and beautiful as the details we often admire on deck!

For those of you who were venturing a guess on the latest project in the Heritage shop—you were correct!

Lois lane got a complete set of new thwart knees. They turned out to be beautiful and elegant, just like Lois.

She also got a new rail, traditionally steam bent and beautifully scarfed in. She is ready for her final sanding and coating of varnish!

Lois Lane is an important part of our small boat fleet that we carry with us. Not only does she carry all of the supplies for our lobster bakes ashore, she also provides a beautiful experience for any that crave a little excursion after we anchor in the evening. Did you know that she is even fitted with a sail rig? Why not make an evening sail in Lois Lane a part of your venture aboard Heritage this summer?
