All those inquiring about who I recommend as Karriker Customs transitions out of state, please feel free to say hello to .
Emiliano has been apprenticing with me for about three years, and has decided to continue work as he sets up his own workshop in his garage. He has really shown great promise as he's learned the craft over the years. He particularly put a lot of focus into solid fretwork, and he continues to challenge himself and improve in many other areas as he progresses. If anyone would be willing to give him a shot, I know he will do a lot of great work in the Sacramento music community in the future.
I thank you all again for all the support you've shown me over the years. It's time for me to pass the torch over, and I hope you all will give him the same chance you all gave me as I started so many years ago.
Good luck, Emiliano! I know you will do great things!

Well, I apologize to everyone for being so vague in my last post, but now that things are official, I can finally share with everyone the good news. The family and I signed paperwork on a new home in Pennsylvania.
"Why Pennsylvania?", you may be asking.
Well, I have been offered an opportunity to work directly with
The family and I took some time at the end of March to fly out, see the area, get some time in shop with Ricky, as well as the Barlow family, and get a good gauge on how we all felt about it. My family and I really enjoyed our time with the Barlow family, as well as seeing the surrounding area, and Ricky didn't seem like he wanted to rush me out of his shop as soon as possible. So, we took everything as a positive sign to move forward from there.
It's a bittersweet thing to close one chapter of life to move forward to the next one, but it's a necessary step in order to continue to progress in our goals in life. This July marks fifteen years of guitar repair and customization for me. That would not have been possible without the trust and support of the Sacramento music community. That support continued to grow, until I was working with many artists from all over northern California, the bay area, Southern California and beyond. I cannot thank you all enough for your support for all of these years.
Getting the call to work with Barlow Guitars is a fantastic opportunity that I do not take lightly. As amazing as that opportunity is, it is still bittersweet to say goodbye to so many clients that I have had the opportunity to get to know over the years and develop great friendships with. I will miss you all, immensely. Each of you has helped in shaping who I am as a craftsman, as well as a person, and I proudly take that with me as the Karriker Customs chapter comes to a close. Thank you all. Sincerely.

Well, I can't divulge too much information right now, but Karriker Customs as it has operated for the last 10 years has come to an end. It's not ending for any other reason than to take the next step. I'll be able to share what that step is very soon, but as things are right now, we'll just have to wait to make sure the new venture is confirmed and finalized.
So, at this point, I will no longer be taking in any more work. I cannot express enough how appreciative I am to the entire music community for supporting me for all of these years.
During this transition, there are many talented local techs in the Sacramento community that will be here to continue to take good care of all of your instruments. I have had an apprentice for the last three years that has really shown great promise in his abilities, and has decided to keep the shop focus on fretwork and attention to detail moving forward. Anyone who is willing to give Emiliano's abilities a chance can reach him at the same shop number I have had for years. I absolutely recommend his work, and can say with complete confidence that he will take great care of your instruments.
Again, thank you all so much for your support all of these years. I will share the news of Karriker Custom's next step as soon as I can.

Shop dogs...she never was one of those. She hated loud noises. I don't blame her one bit though, as her hearing was always much better than my own. But, she sure did like to say hello to anyone who came by the shop. It was clear by her excitement, that she was always of the mind that people were here to see her. She was just gracious enough to also let them visit with me as well.

Now, a family dog...she definitely was one of those. And, she was great at it too. She loved the kids, and was always patient with them as toddler hands would sometimes grab and pull. She instinctively knew that they were the small ones in the pack, and that they were learning and growing. Eventually they became loving pack members that played together all the time. She loved playing with water. She didn't necesarily like getting wet, unless it was a hot day, but she loved to chase and bite at streams of water from the hose. She also loved to play fetch. You would know it was time to take a break when she would fetch one last time, bring it half way back, drop it and lay down and stretch out as she caught her breath. The older she got, the less throws we got in before she would lay down and stretch out. That was okay. The older I get, the more I relate to that sentiment as well. "Let's just lay down, stretch out and enjoy the breeze."
As the days passed by, the less sure footed she became. Her diminishing vision didn't help with that either. Her once unparalleled hearing faded day by day as well.

One of the greatest tragedies of life, is the all too short lifespan of our beloved furry family members. While we will miss her greatly, we are also comforted with the fact that she will no longer be in any more daily pain or discomfort.
We will see eachother again someday, and we will lie down, stretch out and enjoy the breeze together once more.

Rest easy Roxie.

I'm pretty sure this is the nicest condition 1953 that i've ever seen in person. The only part that's even showing any signs of binding rot, is just at the neck heel joint. Everything else checks out beautifully, especially given its age. Thank you so much for bringing this in

It is looking much happier and healthier now!

After the fretwork was done, I did a little electronics repair of a couple of cold solder joints, as well as a broken solder joint, to get things back in proper working order. All components remained original, and did not need replacement.

Then, I made a riser out of ebony for the bridge pickup, to bring it a little closer to the strings for the new going on. I also aligned and installed a as per the clients request.

We often asked about the fret work and rolled fretboard edges on our Stratocaster® or Telecaster® replacement necks. Here are the details about how we install frets, treat the fretboard edges, and whether your neck will be ready to play out of the box.

Thanks to for introducing me to these tuning machines from .works
These are EXCELLENT replacement tuners in place of tuning machines, not to mention campared to the cost of even finding an available set of Steinbergers. These are very solidly made, have great weight to them, and operate super smoothly. You can even order them in stainless, black or brass (gold).
I ordered a couple of sets to keep on hand in the shop for future repairs/upgrades.

I'm sure the fates were just making sure I got that crappy cast molded nut out of there anyway. That's looking much better, and I am at proper string depths. Now, to double check the setup work, get the intonation fine tuned and get the next instrument on the bench. Feeling better already!

A fender factory nut...kicked me in mine this morning.

I was getting to the last of my setup process this morning, and starting to cut the final depths of the string slots in the nut. The D and G strings of a bass typically angle steeply toward the string tree, so I try to angle the string slots as well. Nothing drastic, just enough to make sure the strings actually rest firmly to the bottom of the slot. I had finished up the G, and started on the D string. Visually, it needed come down a little bit, so I marked the bottom of the slot with a pencil. I started my filing, and stopped before removing the pencil mark at the front of the slot. Place the string back in, and got an immediate buzz note calling back to me.
A heavy sigh and a visual check, and yep! I "cut too low". In reality, the string must have been sitting up high off the back of the nut, and I certainly didn't even think to check for gapping at the front under the string before filing. It's definitely my mess up, but was also a clear foul up in the setup department coming off the line.

Oh well, time to just shake my head and start to make a new nut. Keep moving forward.

I hope everyone is having a good Thursday!

A little bit of electronics cleaning, as well as a fresh and on this awesome for Vicente Sauceda.
The balance on this thing is great, and because of how far back the bridge is set on the body, it really makes you feel like you are playing a short scale bass. This is definitely one of the most impressive basses for it's price point to come through the shop in a while. Hey bass players, keep your eye out for one of these!

I decided to try the balanced tension set. Having used Elixirs for many years previously (nanoweb for a while until the optiwebs became available), I have to say that these strings don't even feel like there's a coating on there at all. It feels like a regular string with much less friction noise. The balanced tension of the strings feel really nice. I have to say that using regular gauge string sets over the past years, I never really paid much attention to the tensile feel of each string individually. Now, with trying out this balanced tension set, it definitely feels noticeably consistent, especially since I am a player that uses a lot of left-hand string vibrato as well as bending. This set has really made a believer out of me, and I think i've found a new favorite string set!
