Devil’s Sinkhole Society Annual Meeting Held

Wednesday evening, January 15, the Devil’s Sinkhole Society held its 2025 annual meeting. The Society has been in service to the community, operating the Rocksprings Visitors Center and providing tours and other support for the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area as a Texas Parks friends group since 2001.

After a delicious potluck buffet featuring Bennie Piper’s enchiladas and beans, Aguilera rice, Sandra West’s pralines and banana pudding, and other delicious items, President Andrew Barnebey reviewed some of the bigger moments of the preceding year.

The highlight of the year was easily the one hundred guests who turned out for the April 8 total eclipse. Guests came from about twelve different states and four other countries.

A second top highlight was Texas Parks’ hiring of new park superintendent Paris Gill specifically for the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area. It’s been at least ten years since the Sinkhole has had its very own park staff. New funding provided to our state park system by the voters of Texas and other legislative measures are allowing good park enhancements to occur all across the state.

A third positive item is a Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation grant that has slated four bird blinds to be added to the state natural area which will expand the site’s ability to attract birders and other outdoors enthusiasts.

Barnebey also mentioned two bits of bad news the Society endured this year: bat numbers were the lowest in all the 24 years Devil’s Sinkhole volunteers have provided bat tours.

The worst day for the Society in a long time, however, was the death of Superintendent Ken Watson. Watson was an icon of the Texas Parks system and one of the best superintendents to ever supervise the Devil’s Sinkhole, and most of all, a really great human being.

The annual meeting concluded with the reelection of 5 of the nine board members:

Returning for new two-year terms are Treasurer Emma Barnebey, Secretary D.L. Somerville and at-large board members Mike Cox, Kim Ort, and Dennis Piper. They rejoin the other four members: President Barnebey, Vice President Richard West, and at-large members Joe Rendon and Mike Saunders. Park Superintendent Paris Gill serves as an ex-officio board member.

The Devil’s Sinkhole Society offers day tours and nature walks at this time of year. Tours are available Wednesdays through Sundays preferably at 10 AM and 1 PM, though there is flexibility. All tours start at the Rocksprings Visitors Center on the town square and reservations for tours are helpful. Call 830-683-2287 or email [email protected]. The visitors center is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 AM until 3 PM.

Devil’s Sinkhole Holds First Day Hike

2025 is off to a busy start at the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area with a full “America’s First Day” set of events.
Starting with the “America’s First Day Hike” event at 10:30 A.M., the volunteers of the Devil’s Sinkhole Society welcomed 19 participants. Hailing from many places in Texas: Midland, Houston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, a family of eight from Longview, Texas, including an exchange student from Nagoya, Japan, and, of course, Rocksprings, the group of 19 hikers enjoyed a calm walk along the state natural area’s Buzzard Trap Trail.
The group was led by two master naturalists who helped explain some of the many highlights of this special Texas Parks location. The “America’s First Day Hike” is an event held by many of the nation’s state parks to kick off national park visitation each year.
The afternoon saw a return to the regular schedule with five guests who came to Rocksprings for the regular day tour, a guided visit to the Devil’s Sinkhole National Natural Landmark.
Until mid-January, the day tour is the only tour available from the volunteers of the Devil’s Sinkhole Society. Starting on January 18, nature walks will again be available.
These two tours are available Wednesdays through Sundays and preferred start times for the two tours are 10 A.M. and 1 P.M. The famous bat tours do not begin until the spring.
To experience the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area, call, e-mail, or drop by the Rocksprings Visitors Center. The phone number is 830-683-2287. E-mail is [email protected]. The visitors center is located on the southwest corner of the Rocksprings town square, 101 N. Sweeten St. to be specific.

Welcome to Paris Gill, who begins tomorrow as the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area superintendent! It has been at least a decade since we had staff posted uniquely to the DSSNA.
Everyone in the Society is pleased!

We are very sad to report that our truly exceptional park superintendent, a great man and good friend Ken Watson died yesterday morning.

All of us at his two parks, Kickapoo Cavern State Park and the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area will miss him a lot.

Funerary details are still pending.

Our condolences to all his family and friends.

Part of Monday’s awesome Bracken cave show! Thanks to our hosts!

We are happy to report that the bats have improved in numbers. As of tomorrow, September 13, we are reverting to standard bat tour prices: Kids 4-12, six bucks; Adults 13-64, fourteen bucks; and Seniors 65+, eleven bucks. The tour will meet at the Rocksprings Visitors Center at 6:30 P.M.
We had been seeing only a few hundred bats, but we are now seeing thousands. Bat numbers should continue improving as we move through September and October.

Star Gazing at the Devil’s Sinkhole September 7

ROCKSPRINGS–The Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area will hold a combined bat emergence show and stargazing night September 7, 2024.

The stargazing will be run by the San Antonio Astronomical Association, and so there should be around five different astronomers each with their own special telescope or two for guests to experience the starriest night of the month.

Guests paying cash can go directly to the state natural area gate located on US Highway 377 roughly five miles north of the City of Rocksprings and two miles south of the intersection of US 377 and Texas Highway 41.

The cost to attend the “Bats and Stars” event is ten dollars for most guests and five dollars for youth aged 4-17.

The bats have been very low in numbers this year, but the cave swallows and owls have been helping to delight guests well.

Those wishing to pay by credit card should go first to the Rocksprings Visitors Center located on the Rocksprings town square.

For more information, call 830-683-2287 or email [email protected].

The volunteers of the Devil’s Sinkhole Society provide tours to the national natural landmark five days a week. Tours to see the cave, nature walks, the famous evening bat tour, and the rare morning bat return tour are available now.

We still don't have enough bats to charge full bat tour price, but we are getting close! Bats are rising in numbers, coming out of the great cave earlier and earlier, and the Great Horned Owl family that lives in the cave is VERY active.

Reserve a spot (Wednesday through Sunday open) at 830-683-2287. Email is [email protected]
