Getting a second opinion on a purchase is always a good idea. A client bought a pendant with a diamond that had this accompanying document. The stone was in reality, 0.80 ct. with I1 clarity, G colour and was clarity enhanced. Appraised value for the piece totaled 3500.00. The platinum metal was worth more than the stone.

One of my "regulars" found a pair of stud earrings a few years ago and assumed that they were cubic zirconias because the "looked too good". Before tossing them, she decided to have me check them. They were 3.60 ct. tw diamonds!!! Valued at a little over 20K. She was so happy, she sent me these!!

In most cases, inclusions in a stone lower the value. In some, it can raise the value. Case in point, Demantoid garnet with "Horsetail" inclusions (actinolite).

This has been my mantra forever. In addition to removing your jewelry when bathing, washing hands or entering any kind of liquid, professional and regular cleaning is a must. The added benefit of having a professional do the cleaning from time to time is getting an inspection for stone and structural security. In the meantime, I suggest an inexpensive ultrasonic cleaner for home cleaning.

Jewelry can be a hiding place for bacteria, even if you wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Here is how quality makes a difference. Both are aquamarines and huge! Left is 1409.70 cts at 160.00/ct. The left is 200.00 cts. with nice colour but rather included for 40.00/ct. Also, while size does matter, it doesn't always equate to lots more money per carat. We saw much smaller stones that would be suitable for actually wearing for 160.00/ct and higher.
