Did a little prospecting today with some new flies and equipment. 14’ Spey can throw a 12” fly where you want it. Won’t be long now…..

Throwing speys for days.…. A two handed rod allows you to throw 100 feet of line with about a 10th of the effort as a single-handed rod. Got into a decent number of these guys in about an hour and a half effort this afternoon on an after work special.

Things are getting started quite nicely. Today might be a good day to hit the river.

Stockers….. something to do and they were responding well enough to a fly. The little one had a broken spine that I discovered when cleaning it but somehow managed to survive and hit in the strongest current at the head of the pool.

Some ice to deal with lately and not many fish. But at least I’m getting out. That all can change after this next round of weather and warm rain. Always take advantage of what I call Indian summers or quick warm spells in the dead of winter.

I won some metal. Not a terrible 2021. We had one of the best schoolie striper runs I’ve ever seen in May and June on the Potomac and maybe one of the best walleye years I’ve seen in 20 something years fishing the tidal Potomac.

Went Cobia fishing to the mouth of the bay this weekend fishing everywhere from the ocean to well inside the barrier islands. We had a couple slow days with one really amazing day finding an enormous school of reds and Cobia together. I had to take one night off then hit the upper Potomac for a few hours before the storm last night.

This continues to be a problem.

Red tide, a toxic algae bloom, has killed more than 600 tons of marine life in Florida. CNN's Nick Valencia reports that the Florida government and environmentalists are at odds over the cause of the bloom.

A good fishing buddy sent me these recently; a cicada eating steelhead size trout from last week on the north branch of the Potomac and a mulberry eating carp from the other day. The world class dry fly fishing is mostly behind us but some fish are still looking up. It sure was a fun ride.

An hours effort today and Par got his first carp on the fly. A good one at that.

Insane top water dry fly action again today. All visual, all sight casting. Doesn’t get much better. Cicadas all over the water and singles and schools of carp everywhere we looked. Doubles were common. It took more time to fight the fish then to hook another one.

Cicadas are flying in my garage at night. Mostly males because they are singing when they hit the ground. So does that mean all I have to do is fish cicadas under a dock light at night somewhere?

It went from slow to white hot in a day. Numerous refusals from missed fish but sealed the deal on many more too.

A friend took his kids down to a trout stream today between sports and fed some trout.

Hickory shad have slowed way down on the river. A few white shad around but you have to be in the right spot at the right time. Decent showing of schoolie to medium 12 pound striped bass around at low light with good current. Herring are thicker than grains of sand at a beach so there’s a lot of options for the fish.

But the largemouth on the ponds have spawned and were feeding like crazy today. Numerous fish in two separate half hour efforts and all on the fly. poppers, clawdads and small game changers being the best fly.

District Angling

Oh... and these guys have started crawling from the ground in Potomac, Md area. Expect the massive invasion could start tonight!? Or the very near future.
