Tomorrow!

Tune in to our page at 6 p.m. (ET) on September 22 to watch biological science technicians from Cape Hatteras National Seashore excavate a sea turtle nest on Ocracoke Island! 🐢

They will count empty eggshells, collect unhatched eggs, and occasionally find live and/or deceased hatchlings during these excavations. While the biological technicians perform their examination of the nest, a park ranger will present a program on sea turtles and share what the biologists have found.

You might think it’s cute when wildlife comes right up to you on the beach. But don’t be fooled. This behavior is not normal--and it’s not because you’re a gull whisperer, either.

When animals continuously find food near humans, they start to connect the dots. And why spend time and energy finding your own food when you can just steal some cheese crackers from the toddler on the beach? Wild animals need to be able to fend for themselves, using their unique adaptations to find natural food that is healthy for them. And when they get too close to humans, accidents can occur, leading to injuries to people or animals.

So, even though you’re a generous person who’s happy to share your snack with a gull in need—please refrain. Keep the wildlife wild by limiting the people food to the people, and cleaning up after yourself.

Something cool to do!

Three super moons in a row (June, July, and August)! A super moon means the full or new moon comes within 90% of its closest approach to earth. This means it will appear bigger and brighter than a regular full moon. June’s Strawberry Moon was the brightest (pictured below), but this Wednesday, July 13th, the Super Buck Moon will be visible - named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. Every culture has a different name for the moon based on what happens at that time of year.

Every week on Tuesday evenings at 9:30pm you can meet a Park Ranger for the Dark Skies Over Hatteras program. Meet in the parking lot for Beach Access Ramp 43 and bring blankets or chairs for an evening of stars and stories on the beach.
