Poland issued a very popular set of stamps that ran many years depicting Polish Royalty. In 1990, there was a valuation change in the Polish economy and the 1990 set was overprinted with new valuations. However, there were some stamps that made it out into the collecting world with no overprint. The issued stamps had a value of 1000 zloty overprinted on the 40 zloty stamp in red, and the 50 zloty stamp was overprinted with a 1500 zloty value. Why is this important to look for? The overprinted set is valued at $1.40 while the stamps pictured below have a value of $275. Keep an eye out, you might have some gems in your collection. During the German Occupation of Poland prior to World War I, the German Post allowed for certain cities to have a local post that delivered the mail to the inhabitants of that city once the German Post delivered to the city proper. They allowed the Local Post - in this case Warsaw - to charge a surcharge for this service and apply a handstamp. As you can see on the back of the letter, there is a violet square handstamp for 6 groszy. This is an example of the Warsaw City Local Post in action. The red rectangular stamp on the the front shows that the letter passed the Censor in the city of Posen.

In 1921, these “stamps” which are actually labels, were issued for the Poznan Air Show. The Stamp on the left is the imperf at bottom variety. There were 50,000 of them printed and forgeries abound in the market. The majority of these labels were favor cancelled at the fair.

In the early years of stamps, Poland was occupied by other nations but the Postal System still functioned. This cover is an example of use of Russian Stamps (letter dated May 7, 1861). It was sent from Mogilev to Warsaw and franked with a Russian 10 kopek stamp (Russia Scott # 2 with a circular cancel of Dots). During WWI, this city became the headquarters of the Russian Imperial Army.

The Polish Post frequently issues stamps of a religious nature. The stamp below was issued in 2019 to commemorate, St. Adalbert (956-997 AD) who is the Patron Saint of Missionairies. He died a violent death while trying the Prussians to Christianity.

Each year, Poland issues a stamp depicting Regional Products - and this year the winner is Kielbasa. This picture depicts the version that is more like a smoked kielbasa. Fischer # 4853 depicts General Wladyslaw Sikorski who was a famous military subject during and before both World Wars. Prior to the first World War, he organized the underground organizations that promoted the independence from Russia. During WWII, he was the Prime Minister of the Polish Forces in Exile. He died in 1943 in a plane crash off the coast of Gibraltar.

This new issue - Fischer # 4852 - depicts two versions of "Our Lady of Trakai". The tab on the right in the picture is the icon located at the main alter in the Church St. Mary Church in Takai. It was a gift from the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos to Grand Duke Vytautas on the occasion of his baptism.
