As we have all witnessed, the wildfires in Los Angeles have been devastating in the loss of lives, property and entire communities. At Visit Rancho Cordova, our thoughts are with the residents, business owners, displaced visitors and first responders. Over 90,000 people remain displaced by evacuation orders.

We have received questions from numerous people asking about the best ways to help. We encourage those who want to assist to donate to the LA Wildfire Recovery Fund, benefiting the American Red Cross. The Red Cross has been essential in providing support to those affected by the wildfires, including safe shelter, meals, emotional support and other critical services.

Our tourism colleagues Discover Los Angeles ( ) have established a dedicated page where you can make a donation. They are pledging to match all donations dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. You can find the donation link in our bio.

With strong winds in the fire zones, the crisis is far from over. Donations will help both short-term needs and long-term recovery. If you are looking to help, thank you in advance. If you or your loved ones have been affected by these fires, we are holding you in our hearts.

"The Cho" or No? 🤔 A Note from Visit Rancho Cordova

Sactown. Sin City. Beantown. The Big Easy. La La Land. Big D. Chi Town.

What's in a city nickname? Sometimes, the past... AND the future.

You may have heard about one of our recent marketing campaigns referring to Rancho Cordova as "The Cho." We understand that this city nickname stirs up mixed feelings. In some cases, very strong feelings!

Some of our residents were around when it was created as rude slang many years ago in efforts to make Rancho Cordovans feel bad about where they lived. Over the years, the term's meaning slowly began to evolve. Today, our team can see that this nickname has been reclaimed by many and is coming back strong with a new connotation: community pride.

Young couples who were born and raised here (and are now raising their families here), new Bay Area transplants, and even some of the most long-standing residents have begun to use "The Cho" in a more positive way to signify that they are proud to represent their hometown. Meeting planners booking business here have started to inquire about "The Cho" by name in their proposal requests. Visitors and travelers to the region have overwhelmingly positive reactions to the nickname and have asked us where they can get a shirt featuring "The Cho" to wear back home as a souvenir.

In efforts to bolster and encourage this positive sentiment, we created the merch people asked for and paid close attention to what happened next.

The results? After launching our merch store in April, Cho shirts instantly became our best sellers. At live events, our Cho stickers are the first ones to run out of stock.

Our data is proving that the phrase "The Cho" is compelling, competitive, and captivating, helping our city to garner attention in a powerful, overwhelmingly positive way and appear more identifiable in Sacramento County.

"The Cho" is just one of our many marketing campaigns. We have other campaigns underway at the same time. But we felt it would be beneficial to share a bit more context with you about this one.

At Visit Rancho Cordova, we consider community and traveler sentiment with great thoughtfulness and care as we plan our campaigns. We weigh all sides of opinion when making our decisions, including negative opinions. Whether you'd rock a Cho hoodie or not, we can all agree that there's a powerful sentiment rising in Rancho Cordova: people are PROUD to live here, work here, and play here. Word is getting around, and that's some seriously good news!

72-year-old Rancho Cordova jam and jelly-maker featured at Bliss Marketplace, Jim Austin, just made the NEW YORK TIMES for winning over 100 award ribbons for goods he's submitted at fairs throughout the years! 🍓

Head to Bliss soon to check out his tasty jams. We love the pomegranate!

We are so proud of our vendor and manager, Jim Austin! He's won multiple ribbons and golden bears from the state fair and was just featured in New York Times.

Here's the write up about him!
"Jim Austin
Age: 72

Home kitchen: Rancho Cordova, Calif.

Ribbon count: More than 100.

Day job: Retired nurse practitioner.

Notable wins: A two-time winner of the Golden Bear, which is awarded to the best entry from each competitive category in the California State Fair. Prickly pear jelly and brandied Rainier cherries were his winning entries.

Pro tip: Be a perfectionist. It’s something he learned while growing up on a farm near Turlock, in the Central Valley. “I still hear my mom’s voice always saying, ‘Make it as perfect as you can. If something isn’t right, you don’t proceed.’”

First fair: He submitted a lemon meringue pie in a county fair 55 years ago and won a blue ribbon. His mother’s pie took fourth place. “They said her meringue wept too much. She was not happy.”

Retirement advantage: When he was working full time, he could prepare only one or two baking entries a year. Canning became a retirement project. He started experimenting with recipes so he could sell jams and jellies at a farmers’ market, and used the state fair as a proving ground.

How to tell if someone really knows how to can: Taste the bread-and-butter pickles: “It’s really all in the spicing.”

This year: He has been asked to become a judge, so his competition days are over."

His award winning jellies and jams are available for purchase at Bliss Marketplace Rancho Cordova and Bliss Market Roseville.

Thank you, Comstock's magazine! 😍 "Today, much of Rancho Cordova feels fresh and modern. With a cornucopia of new housing, and more to come, the city now draws higher-income residents, often young families. ... Perhaps the city’s greatest strength is that it boasts one of the best jobs-to-housing balances in the region. Rancho’s commercial, office and industrial areas comprise 3,500 businesses with a workforce of more than 65,000, second in the region to downtown Sacramento as a job center."
