The South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO), the only state-of-the-art natural history museum on the South Fork of Long Island, is pleased to announce its new Young Environmentalists Society (YES!), which will hold its premiere meeting at the museum on Saturday, February 29 from 10:00am to 11:30am. SOFO’S YES! group leader, Mare Dianora, is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice involves building community and exploring connections to home and place, and is a SOFO member, educator, and mother of two young sons. SOFO would like to thank an anonymous donor for sponsoring its YES! initiative.
YES!, which is open to young environmentalists, aged 10 - 16, who want to help stop climate change as they discuss various challenges and discuss ideas that can impact our precious environment, will meet at SOFO the last Saturday of every month. The group will create and explore through experience-based learning, place based-learning, critical thinking processes, and local activism to develop strategies for individuals and the community to help shape how we should live on this planet now and in the future. YES! parents are welcome to attend the meetings and participate as they wish.
The program will include guest speakers and field trips exploring topics such as hydroponic farming, composting, environmental career goals, water conservation, robotics, food and merchandise packaging, and will design and create an eco-friendly, reusable YES! eco-friendly bag that will be available at SOFO’s gift shop.
“We hope that young environmentalists in our community will join SOFO in our effort to inspire and educate children and families to be caring stewards of our planet,” said SOFO’s Executive Director, Frank Quevedo. “We invite our members to contact us to enroll their children in this important program. We look forward to collaborating with our young conservationists.”
