Happy Flag Day!
Did you know that St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental United States, has flown multiple flags throughout its rich history? Each flag tells a unique story of the city's diverse heritage and cultural evolution.
1. Spanish Flag (1565-1763)
2. British Flag (1763-1784)
3. Spanish Flag (1784-1821)
4. United States Flag (1821-1861)
5. Confederate Flag (1861-1862)
6. United States Flag (1862-Present)

After the Civil War, St. Augustine was restored to Union control. Since then, the American flag has flown proudly, symbolizing unity and resilience.
Today, in our historic town and the United States, we celebrate the symbol of our freedom, unity, and national pride – the American flag! On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. Each stripe and star holds a story, representing the 13 original colonies and the 50 states of our great nation.
As we honor this day, let's reflect on what the flag represents: liberty, justice, and the enduring spirit of the American people. Whether flying high on a pole, displayed in our homes, or worn on our hearts, the flag is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and freedoms we cherish.
Please take a moment today to appreciate the flag and all it stands for!

We hope you had a great St. Patrick's Day!

While St. Patrick’s Day is now associated with wearing green, parades, and beer, the holiday is grounded in history that dates back more than 1,500 years. The earliest known celebrations were held in the 17th century on March 17, marking the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick in the 5th century. Here are some interesting facts about St. Patrick and the holiday.
1. The Real St. Patrick Was Born in Britain - At age 16 he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and sold as a slave to a Celtic priest in the area now known as Northern Ireland. After toiling for six years as a shepherd, he escaped back to Britain. He eventually returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary.
2. St. Patrick Was Never Canonized - Despite his status as a patron saint, St. Patrick was never canonized by the Church during his lifetime.
3. There Were No Snakes Around for St. Patrick to Banish from Ireland
4. Leprechauns Are Likely Based on Celtic Fairies
5. The Shamrock Was Considered a Sacred Plant -According to legend, St. Patrick used the plant as a visual guide when explaining the Holy Trinity. By the 17th century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism.
6. Ireland’s Only Female Patron Saint, Brigid, Has Her Own Holiday
7. The First St. Patrick’s Day Parade Was Held in America
While people in Ireland have celebrated St. Patrick since the 1600s, the tradition of a St. Patrick’s Day parade began in America and predates the founding of the United States.
8. The Irish Were Once Scorned in America - Due to the devastating potato blight in 1845 that caused widespread hunger in Ireland, about 1 million perished and another 2 million immigrated to other countries with 25% of those immigrants coming to America. Once they arrived, the Irish refugees were looked down upon as disease-ridden, unskilled, and a drain on welfare budgets.
9. Corned Beef and Cabbage Was an American Innovation

Fourth of July in the Nation's Oldest City

St. Augustine celebrates America's Independence Day with the yearly "Fireworks Over the Matanzas" celebrations from 6 to 10:00 p.m. in downtown St. Augustine.

Our city's fireworks display is one of the largest and most spectacular on the East Coast with 5,000 shells exploding up to 2,000 feet and as low as 100 feet.

The evening begins with a free concert at the Plaza de la Constitucion by the ever-popular All-Star Orchestra. Their two-hour concert features big band and swing music as well as well-known patriotic tunes. Bring chairs or a blanket for seating.

The fantastic fireworks display begins at 9:30 p.m. with 20 minutes of oohs and aahs! Set to patriotic music with a sound system that can be heard over the whole bayfront area, it is a stirring way to celebrate! You can view the fireworks along Avenida Menendez, the Bridge of Lions, and South Castillo Drive.

Please note road closures will begin at 8:00 p.m. and end at 11:00 p.m. so make sure you arrive early. Please check this website for more tactical information from the city of St. Augustine - Fireworks Over the Matanzas.

After the fireworks show, many restaurants will remain open for your dining enjoyment. After a fabulous evening, retire to your spacious condo at Island South Vacation Rental for peaceful rest and relaxation.
