Dolphin/Eco/History/Sunset Tours

Come join us for a Dolphin Bay Tour. The dolphins are often found in the local waters of St Augustine. They make an appearance almost every time we set off for our adventure. Also on many occasions along the cruise, we spot a sea turtle and manatee in the back creeks and estuaries, along with many different species of birds. Our experienced crew will point them o

ut to help identify the different critters and get you close enough to enjoy them without interfering with their normal wild behavior. Sharing a little history of St Augustine along the way adds that special touch. It is as if we cruise back in time from a nautical perspective with interesting facts based on the rich nautical history of the oldest city in North America. We strive to give you an authentic feel of what was seen and felt by travelers from the past as they arrived by water to our shores. Our captains and crews are not only full of interesting and historical information about the city and its natural inhabitants, but they are also experienced on the water. The crew and deckhands love this community and love sharing its charm with friendly southern hospitality. They are always focused on your comfort and safety - the crew will gladly snap a photo of you or your group or answer almost any question if they can. So don’t be shy - we are here to make sure that when you share info about your trip, our cruise is always the best part of the story. Nights of Lights of St Augustine by Water – Nov. 20 – Jan 31

Voted top ten must-see holiday sights, is especially suited to our travel back in time approach to boat tours. This peaceful cruise along the banks of this charming seaside community is incredibly beautiful this time of year as the light -spectacular of St Augustine’s Nights of Lights leaves you glowing. This holiday sight is most beautiful from a water tour as the millions of lights reflect off the shimmering -surface. This celebration is a continuation of the century-old Spanish Holiday tradition right here in the early settlement of St Augustine. The nights of lights continue the tradition that originally was celebrated with the placement of candles in every window of homes during the Holiday Season to welcome guest and symbolize a lit path for Mary and Joseph so they may find a room within their own homes when there was no room for them in the inn. Today’s lights are a modern celebration of the tradition with a few secret twists that will intrigue most visitors - do not forget to ask your captain and crew what the origin and meaning of the single red bulb hidden in the millions of flame-colored bulbs mean and why it continues today.

Museum founder Otto Lightner acquired much of his collection during his years as a publisher in Chicago, including this painting of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. Featured in our upcoming exhibition, this 1918 painting by William Clusmann adopts the bright palette and broken brushwork of Impressionism to perfectly capture the prosperity and optimism of pre-Depression Chicago. Clusmann shows a city humming with life, as figures, cars, and buses move through the streets, and high-rise buildings stretch to the sky.

Thomas Graham, PhD

2024 Herschel Shepard Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation

Thomas Graham, PhD is being recognized with the 2024 Herschel Shepard Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation for his extraordinary contribution to the historical legacy of St. Augustine and its environs. Dr. Graham is an author and Professor Emeritus of History in the Humanities Department at Flagler College. Born in Miami and raised in Fort Lauderdale, his ties to Florida run deep, as he is a descendent of Francisco Xavier Sanchez, an important figure in the early Spanish settlement of Florida.

What is the Herschel Shepard Award?

The Saint Augustine Historical Society annually considers nominees for its highest tribute to a person, organization, group or project that makes and extraordinary contribution to the preservation of St. Augustine’s historical legacy. The tribute is named for preservation architect Herschel E. Shepard in recognition of his distinguished career and outstanding contributions to the design and preservation of historic structures in St. Augustine. Herschel’s sphere of influence is national and international in scope but nowhere else has his generosity of spirit, exemplary dedication and extraordinary service been witnessed more than in Saint Augustine.

The award seeks to recognize others who, like Herschel, have put forth extraordinary efforts in preserving Saint Augustine’s storied past and have been inspirational examples of public citizenry.

Hanged...and hanged again

Captain William Kidd was hanged for piracy on this day in 1701. History has shown that Kidd, while not the kindest of captains, was likely not a pirate at all - simply a privateersman on the wrong side of the shifting political wind. Accused of attacking British merchants, Kidd maintained that the ships he took as prizes had sailed under French passes. When asked to produce the passes, Kidd claimed to have already surrendered them at the time of his arrest. The missing passes were proved to have been in the possession of the Admiralty Court all along - but not until research archivists discovered them among court documents over 200 years later.

While the five counts of piracy may not have stood had this evidence been produced at his trial, it is likely that the single count of murder against him - by fracturing the skull of an insubordinate crewman with an iron-bound bucket - would have sent Kidd to the gallows anyway.

The rope broke when Kidd has hanged and he was promptly hanged again. His body was gibbeted and hung for three years at Tilbury Point on the Thames as a warning to would-be pirates.
