It’s International Cat Day! Did you know cats have been welcomed on ships all over the world for hundreds of years?? Superstitious sailors often believed that cats protected them by bringing good luck. They also proved to be indispensable pest controllers, protecting provisions and cargo from rats. Plus, cats have a high ability to adapt to new surroundings, and were therefore highly suitable for service on a ship.

Happy Tallship Tuesday! that the only “rope” on board a ship is the bell rope? Everything else is called a line!
The term “line” is used to describe a rope that has been cut and prepared for a specific purpose on a ship, such as adjusting sails.
Each line has a special name that describes its function (anchor line, dock line, etc.) In sailing, the lines that control the sails are called sheets, and the lines that pull the sails into position are called halyards. 🪢

Today’s Tallship Tuesday is also a Tacking Tuesday!Tacking or “coming about” is a sailing maneuver where a sailing craft, whose next destination is into the wind, turns its bow toward and through the wind. It is a fundamental technique for changing the side of the boat that faces into the wind in order to make progress towards a desired destination.
