Happy Tall Ship Tuesday!! With all this cold weather recently, the crew has been wearing their beanies on board! Did you know that sailors were the first to have pompoms on their sailors’ caps? The lower decks on old ships had low ceilings, and big waves at sea often caused the ships to rock and jolt up and down, sometimes quite violently. To prevent the sailors bumping their heads hard below deck, a round cushion was sewn onto the tops of their caps. The story goes that the pompoms in the French Navy were red because a sailor bumped his head so hard that it bled. So not only is the pompom on your beanie a stylish addition, it’s also an important safety feature! 🥶⚓️

Christmas is just a few days away so for this week’s Tall Ship Tuesday, we’re talking about the Rouse Simmons, also known as the “Christmas Tree Schooner”!
In the early 1900s, Chicago had dozens of sailing ships selling Christmas trees directly from their berths along the Chicago River’s Clark Street docks. By 1912, there were an estimated dozen to two dozen schooners engaged in this trade, of which the schooner Rouse Simmons became the most famous. The 123-foot three-masted schooner, decorated with lights hung from bow to stern, invited guests on board to choose from thousands of cut trees. Herman Schuenemann, also known as “Captain Santa”, was the owner of the Rouse Simmons. The Christmas tree business was a way for his family to make a little money around the holidays. In addition to selling Christmas trees, Captain Schuenemann’s wife, Barbara, and their three daughters, made and sold wreaths, garlands, and other holiday decorations. However, Captain Schuenemann had earned a reputation for his kindness and generosity, as he gave trees away to many of Chicago’s residents who couldn’t afford to buy them. 🎄⚓️

It is a fundamental technique for changing the side of the boat that faces into the wind in order to make progress towards a desired destination.
