Bullgator Bayou Update-First alligator nest of the season. We've had several of our big females exhibiting nest guarding behavior for the last couple of weeks. Like a nervous Papi, I've been obsessing about them having enough vegetation on the ground to make a nest. I'm walking the fence this afternoon past one of the many small islands. When I notice something had been raking up leaves like crazy. I look up and there it was....our first nest of the season. Standby ....Angie and I will be collecting the eggs to transfer to a hatchling farm soon.

OBX in the House! Rob and his crew from North Carolina checked alligator off their bucket list in a big way this morning. A lifetime of catching big bluefin tuna and marlin made them natural gator hunters. This gator gave them a run for their money!

Adding some surf to the turf! The alligators consumed at least 2/3 of the 150lb pig I gave it them on Friday, along with 3 armadillos, and 4 raccoons. Since beginning the farm, the question has persisted, how will you feed them? We've worked very hard with several of the pest control companies, along with public and private partners to repurpose animals who met untimely ends into alligator food. If our net skills are solid during a charter, we often have a solid five gallon bucket of pogies left over from a kingfishing trip. The pogies, and scrap kingfish carcasses have proven to be great nutritional levelers for the smaller gators as they can quickly pacman them up before the bigger gators get them, unlike the larger carcasses that require crushing and ripping. The pogies have to sit out for a day before feeding so they will float. Tonight, we expanded the menu, and they gators loved it! Porkchops and Pogies were a big hit!

Greetings from Bullgator Bayou!
I've noticed many of my GenX friends have returned to farming in some capacity. Chickens, Bees, Cattle, Horses etc. In November, I joined their ranks as an alligator farmer! I bought 20 acres of blighted wetland at the end of 2022. While this project might not be my Opus, it has consumed the past 18 months of my life. It contained an abandoned(yet beautiful)6-acre borrow pit pond covered in duckweed, 8 abandoned homeless camps, a crime scene from a suspected murder in 2019, and dozens of giant dead pine trees from an arson fire set by a homeless person a few years back. The property also contained a gorgeous canopy of giant oak, cypress, and pine trees blighted by human activity. Because it was predominantly wetlands, all the restoration work had to be performed by hand. Permits had to be obtained from FDEP to install the fence needed to transform the borrow pit into an alligator farm, and construct boardwalks to lessen the impact of human transit activity. Along with a guy from my church who plays Santa Clause each year(pictured), a former marine and a few dozen random day laborers over the course of the project(all on probation:) we cleared away three full penske trucks of garbage that blighted 3 acres, removed an acre of dead pine trees and stumps to construct a food plot for deer/turkeys. Then we hung 2500 ft of 8 gauge chainlink fence through mud and muck around the borrow pit to form the alligator enclosure. Two 200 foot boardwalks, a dozen small foot bridges, and 4 shooting platforms were constructed. All the building materials delivered and garbage removed had to be done vy hand. Hell on Wheels meets Yellowstone :) FWC inspected the enclosure and issued a farming license in November. We now have 62 residents on the farm. Bullgator Bayou Farms is open for business!
