An Invitation to the Past at Audubon State Historic Site
We invite you and your students to visit the Oakley Plantation at Audubon State Historic Site. Within the park you will find a museum with a small gift shop, a nature trail, Oakley House Circa 1821, outbuildings, and a picnic shelters. The museum contains exhibits that reveal life at Oakley in the early 1800’s and tell the story of the Artist Naturalist John James Audubon when he lived at Oakley in 1821.

Audubon’s experience at Oakley Plantation helped shape his masterwork “ The Birds of North America” , and saw the beginnings of the conservation movement. Discover how life at Oakley Plantation and his interactions with all people there both Enslaved and Free shaped the creation of his art.

Currently we offer to school groups the Oakley House tour, a self guided tour of the grounds and one of two additional activities to choose from. Your choices are:

Life of the Enslaved- Students will see our smithy in action as we discuss the jobs those enslaved on a plantation carried out. At the original cabins we discover who the people were that lived here and what their lives were like, including how they helped Audubon create many of his bird pictures.

In the World of Nero- Discover the story of Audubon’s pet hawk and his life at Oakley House. We also find out the stories behind many of the prints Audubon did while he was here as well as try our hand at a nature craft.

How to Book
Please call the park to book a field trip at least four weeks prior to the time that you would like to visit the park with your students. Preregistered school groups are free. To preregister please call the park Monday-Sunday from 9 AM-5 PM at 1-225-635-3739.
