True Story

Friends:

At the age of 15 I joined two neighbors on a late-spring tubing trip on Salt Lake valley's Little Cottonwood Creek, that nearly turned disastrous - twice! This artist rendering depicts a small part of what transpired.

It's a story now recreated in video form (two short segments).

Hidden in the shadows of last night's setting sun.
-
I'd seen raccoon tracks on the mud in the lower marshland, but this was my first glimpse this spring of one up close. It seemed that this young raccoon thought laying still might make it invisible, and it was nearly true. I was looking to the distant fields and trees for large birds, but happened to glance to my right, and my camera's 600mm lens helped to get close.

From white puff-balls to maturing teenagers, what a difference a week makes. This first image was taken seven days ago. In this morning's early sunlight, the two owlets were looking more and more like their mama.

If you're going to take a back-road, try this one in the middle of Utah's San Rafael Swell. This is an area called Fix-It Pass. Word is that this is a common area where machines stop to get "fixed" after toiling over the rough roads that lead to this spot.
