The ST. HELENA BISTRO consistently serves delicious, expertly crafted dishes, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. They use fresh, local ingredients and do not charge a corkage fee at dinner. It has been in existence since 2006 and we’ve dined there many times. Stop by and have a meal - you’ll enjoy it!👍🏼

DALIDA in San Francisco’s Presidio is the restaurant of Top Chef Madison contestant Chef Laura Ozyilmaz which opened in June 2023. The cuisine is Mediterranean with a variety of dishes inspired by Istanbul, Turkey.
We enjoyed delicious and well-prepared food, and this is another food option to try en route to or from wine country!

LIHOLIHO YACHT CLUB, a Michelin-guide restaurant in San Francisco is 👍🏼. We dined here when it first opened and it was nice to see the remodel. (If case you are wondering, no one there wears boat shoes!) The food is still fantastic, and Chef Ravi Kapur is also the chef at the Centurion Lounge at SFO. LIHOLIHO is near Union Square in San Francisco and is worth the stop on your way to or from wine country.

SUNSHINE FOODS MARKET in Saint Helena sells prepared foods as well as high quality ingredients. We attended a buffet dinner party hosted by our friend and were quite impressed with his culinary skills. In addition to the delicious food, the wine selection was an eclectic assortment provided by the host and guests. Many bottles were consumed and a good time was had by all. Cheers to chef Dr. Jason Daniels! 🥂

Wine down Wednesday traveled to Sonoma County to HALLECK VINEYARD in Sebastopol, California. The owner, Ross Halleck, invited us into his lovely home (with an acre of vines in the backyard), and gave us a tasting like we’ve never experienced before (and we’ve visited 50+ different wineries!) This small, family-owned winery produces high quality wines with limited production and Ross is well-versed in a variety of cuisines which made the tasting even more interesting.
The wines at Halleck are Sonoma meets Burgundy. Think a Sancerre-styled Sauvignon Blanc, a Chablisesque Chardonnay, and a broad range of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. Each wine was paired with locally-sourced cheeses and other small bites and each wine was discussed in the context of food. This tasting was fun, delicious, and educational!
Halleck is open by appointment only - if you go, you’ll learn the meaning of “chewing your wine” among other amusing terminology when it comes to tasting wine!

Wine down Wednesday re-visited the VINTNER’S COLLECTIVE in downtown Napa. I’d read about wines from Patel Winery, and this is the only place I could taste it. We tasted an additional 5 wines of our choice which were all to our liking. If you’re into high quality wines from small wineries, you’ll love this place! From their website: “Careful attention to detail, tiny productions, and access to top vineyards in Napa and Sonoma are the hallmarks of our small wineries” (25 -300 cases annually). This is a tasting room in a historic building, and reservations are not necessary.

We dined with friends at SCALA OSTERIA & BAR in downtown Napa, the sister restaurant of Bistro Don Giovanni, which we really like and have visited many times. Scala was just as delightful and delicious! 👍🏼

Some restaurants in Napa Valley hold special dinners which are open to the public. The “Potluck Dinner” series at The CHARTER OAK in St. Helena invited 3 guest chefs to work alongside the regular chefs to create a dinner with a portion of the proceeds going to the Cameron Thompson Legacy Scholarship at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Cameron was a cook at Meadowood and was killed in a car accident in 2019 and the scholarship is designed to help aspiring African American chefs. It was a fun evening. The potluck meal was eclectic and delicious! BENNETT LANE winery in Calistoga offers great wine, views, and friendly hosts. We re-visited this small, family owned winery and were not disappointed! This winery is secluded, with the tasting room surrounded by vineyards on all sides. The wines are solid, the views are outstanding- it’s a wonderful, relaxing experience that’s off the grid.
