Most visitors to St. Ignace know about Castle Rock, but have you seen St. Anthony’s Rock?

This sea stack has stood for 350 million years! Standing in downtown, this ancient breccia, limestone, and dolomite formation was shaped by the waters of prehistoric Lake Algonquin as it receded thousands of years ago. Formed over 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, St. Anthony’s Rock is an example of the “sea-stack” formations left behind as glaciers melted and reshaped the landscape. 🌎

For generations, the indigenous peoples of this region used sea stacks like this as lookouts and ceremonial sites.

In the late 1800s, St. Anthony’s Rock even served as a concert bandstand!

Legend has it that in 1679, explorer Father Louis Hennepin named the rock in honor of St. Anthony of Padua—giving this natural wonder a touch of history along with its geological significance!

On this day in 1837, Michigan became the 26th state in the United States.

Fun fact: just a year earlier, in 1836, the Upper Peninsula joined Michigan, thanks to a boundary settlement with Ohio—making us a state of two beautiful peninsulas!

Today, we celebrate Michigan’s natural beauty, where the Mackinac Bridge brings it all together.
