MARCH 9 | MOURNING & DIFFICULT LOSSES
Saint Frances of Rome
A.D. 1384–1450

When horrible things happen to us, we want to believe that there is a proper way to deal with the experience, to process it, to heal from it. Maybe there is and maybe there isn’t. One thing is for sure and that is this: It is messy.

We learn this truth in a painful way when we lose someone we love. We’re told that the five stages of grieving are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It’s a very neat and tidy process, isn’t it? The reality of course is that life is messy, and we are intimately aware of that when we are grieving.

Saint Frances of Rome had to go through this process and mourn the loved ones she lost, but she emerged as a shining beacon of hope for those who feel their pain will never end.

Married at just twelve to Lorenzo Ponziani, Frances harbored a deep desire for monastic life. However, she embraced her marital role with grace, balancing her spiritual aspirations with her duties as a wife and mother. The couple was blessed with three children, but tragedy soon struck Frances, her family, and all of 15th-century Rome in the form of plague.

Frances lost two beloved children to the plague. Later, she lost her husband as well. Her loss plunged her into deep mourning, filled with intense suffering and spiritual questioning. But in that pain, she found a way to continually offer all her grief, and all of herself, to God. And God showed her a way forward. Frances turned sorrow into service, seeing the face of her lost children in the suffering poor and sick of Rome. She would go on to found the Oblates of Mary, a community of women dedicated to serving the poor.

When you are grieving, it feels like the last thing you need is advice. And there is truth in that. Perhaps the only advice that is useful is, “Give yourself time to mourn, and talk to God.”

God loves you, and he will help you through whatever it is that you’re going through, even if that simply means mourning with you.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO SAY TO GOD ABOUT MY LOSSES? WHAT QUESTIONS DO I HAVE FOR HIM?

I will give myself time and space to mourn.

3 priests, 2 deacons, a great group of people from all around the diocese of Rockford, beautiful weather = a wonderful one day pilgrimage to three states!! First stop was to Venerable Samuel Masacheli’s home and tomb in Benton, Wisconsin. He was a Dominican & architect who came over from Italy in the 1800’s. He was responsible for building 21 churches in the tri-state area. He was a very interesting and holy man. There has since been a miracle so his cause for sainthood might advance soon 🙏🏻. Next stop was New Mellerey Abbey in Peosta, Iowa. One of the monks spoke to us about life in the monastery. We prayed daytime prayer with them and saw the casket factory. From there we went to the quaint town of Galena for shopping time and lunch on our own. Galena is such an awesome little town. Next we went to St. Michael’s so we could see one of the beautiful churches Fr. Samuel built. Last stop was Massbach Winery for some wine tasting. Such a fun day with a great group of people 🙂 Interested in taking a pilgrimage? We’ve always got day trips and all different length pilgrimages going. Check us out: www.StellaMaristours.us

Join us for a wonderful one day pilgrimage. It will be on Thursday, November 9. Breaking away from your regular routine and spending a day with the Lord visiting wonderful Catholic sites is good for the soul and a lot of fun!

We will visit the Trappist Monks in Peosta, Iowa and pray daytime prayer with them. One of the monks will talk to us about cloistered monastic life. We will also see how they earn a living - making caskets! This magnificent monastery is amazing.

We will visit the tomb & home of Ven. Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli in Southern Wisconsin. We will celebrate Mass here (yes we have a saint in the making right in our backyard!). In case you forgot - you can gain an indulgence by visiting a cemetery during the month of November each year.

We will visit St. Michael’s Church in Galena where Fr. Mazzuchelli was the architect. This church has no beams holding it up. It is fascinating. This parish is also home to the Shrine of St. Therese of Lisieux.

We will spend some time in the quaint town of Galena for some early Christmas shopping & a fun lunch. Our last stop will be at the Massbach Ridge Winery in Illinois to do some wine tasting and have a tour. Were you aware that Illinois produces wonderful grapes? They do!

The cost is $140 per person which includes transportation, tours, tips & wine tasting. Lunch will be on your own. As we travel, Fr. Downing & Fr. Grady will share some thoughts on how to prepare our hearts for the coming of Advent. Don’t miss this interesting and informative pilgrimage! We will meet at St. Rita Church in Rockford, IL at 6:30am. We are scheduled to return to St. Rita around 6:30 pm. As with all one day trips, spots are filling quickly but as of today we still have some spots left. Reserve a spot by signing up online. Go to:
