We are an organization bringing awareness to the Movember Foundation and the men's health community.

Hello! My name is Ian Saltmarsh, and I run a non-profit called Travel for a Cure. Travel for a Cure is a third-party supporter of the Movember Foundation*. I've raised awareness for the men's health community for almost ten years! Although I've had great support over the years (raising over $23,000!), I want to do something BIG to celebrate a decade of giving back. My goal this year is to raise ov

er $100,000 by canoeing the Mississippi River and hosting fundraising opportunities along the way! You read that right! On Monday, May 29th, I will start the 2552- mile canoe trip from the headwaters at Lake Itasca to the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico! This journey has always been a dream of mine, and I can't wait to share it with everyone! I humbly invite you to support us on this trip to help men live longer, happier, healthier lives!

*The Movember Foundation is a leading global non-profit organization committed to changing the face of men's health. Men are encouraged to grow mustaches during Movember (formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise vital funds for its men's health programs. However, the discussion isn't limited to just one month. Year-round, since 2003, the Movember community has raised over $1.18 billion and funded over 1,250 projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's mental health and suicide prevention.

Lock & Dam No. 19 was quite the experience! It is the longest lock system, with a drop-down of 38 feet! Instead of the doors opening like a gate, this one has a wall that drops down!
The wind picked up right before Lock 19, but then was at their backs for the most of the day.

After their stroll around Fort Edwards, and a sweet treat from the local cupcake truck, Warsaw Brewery was kind enough to let the guys camp on their land for the night- with views of a perfect sunset🍻

Keithsburg, IL ➡️ Burlington, IA
27 miles today, 944 miles total!

Ian said it was a great day on the river! With calmer winds and a very early start time, Ian and Melissa put in 27 miles (with a 2.5 mile detour.. one of the risks of trying to take a short cut). Hoping for good weather tomorrow, as I'm sure they'd really like to be done with Iowa!🛶

Day 34 (Part 2- Day 12) (Yesterday)
Muscatine, IA ➡️ Keithsburg, IL
15 miles today, 917 miles total!

Nothing like a good recap from Ian:
"Day 34 started off great! We worked our way right through lock 17 right before a tugboat with 15 barges was to enter from down river. A few moments later, the wind picked up to 20+ mph. Had to stop after 15 miles of paddling, ending up in Keithsburg, Illinois
Right before getting off the river, a tugboat flew by us, and for the first time, We almost flipped as a wave breached the canoe! Now enjoying a beautiful sunset."

Dubuque, IA

Today is the day!
The "Salty Walrus" is back in Dubuque, IA with plans of cruising all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico!

Welcome Tony to the team!👋
Tony lives on the River and has always wanted to explore a bit of the water. He's hosted many source to sea paddlers and decided it was his turn on the Mighty Mississippi. With this experience, he'll have a bit of advice for future travelers.
We won't be seeing Ian for about 9 days, but we'll try to keep you guys updated as much as possible. Good luck out there, guys!

Let's not forget why Ian's going on this crazy adventure. To bring awareness to MEN'S HEALTH (of course😉). Swing over to our Movember site, edutatate yourself and maybe donate to the cause.

Day 29 (Part 2-Day 7)
Diamond Bluff, WI ➡️ Red Wing, MN
12 miles today, 777 miles total!

First day of Fall paddling, for the 'Salty Walrus,' brought plenty of sun and a crisp breeze.🍂
A couple of weeks ago, Ian and Calvin planned to cruise from Prescott to Red Wing. Stong winds said otherwise and they made it about half way there.
With transportation help and Monster in good hands, (Thanks mama Carol and Joel!), Katie was able to join her husband aboard the 'Salty Walrus,' to make up those miles. Katie's been along for the journey since day one. However, this was day one on the water, for her. She's the face behind the camera, the keyboard and the steering wheel- in charge of social media updates, transportation, and keeping Ian in line- of course. What's that saying? "Behind every successful man, there is a strong woman." Or something like that😘
Katie and Ian just celebrated their 3rd wedding anniversary! How fitting that they went through Lock & Dam #3 together, today.
It was a beautiful day on the water, but Katie might stick to dry land after that. Definitely more work than one might think and the seats really aren't that comfortable.
Another "make up" day in the books✔️

Day 28 (Part 2-Day 6)
Winnie Campground Landing ➡️ Winnibigoshish Dam
16 miles today, 765 miles total!

We really couldn't have asked for a more perfect night.
With the winds in their favor and a familair groove, Ian and Rick were able to cut straight across Lake Winnie- defeting the big lake in just over 3 hours!
It's been over a year since we've seen Rick, but the guys picked up like it was just yesterday.
Today was one of those days where you truly appreciate nature's beauty and the lives we've been given. Don't even get us started on that sunset!😍 Thankful doesn't even begin to cover it.

Day 28 (Part 2-Day 6)
Lake Winnibigoshish🛶

Wait... is that RICK?!
That's right, Rick is back for a beautiful evening paddle!

Today is a big day as the "Salty Walrus" dips back into Lake Winnie. If you'll remember, Ian and Chris had quite the battle paddling into the big lake last year. Instead of taking on the 16 miles across the lake, with head on winds, they skipped around it- safety always!

With a calm evening breeze and most boat traffic gone for the season, Ian and Rick are making up the miles! They've never started this late in the day, but are prepared for a little night paddle.
Shout out to Facepunch Foods for the high visibility gear!😎 More 'Salty Walrus' hot sauce coming soon!
Here's to another "make-up" day- good luck out there, guys!

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month!

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men over 45.
More than 1.4 million men are diagnosed each year with prostate cancer, and many more are living with the disease.
Prostate cancer grows slowly. Years might pass before some men notice any symptoms – and some men experience no symptoms at all.
Early detection is key! it’s important to check in with your doctor even if you’re feeling fine.

Visit the Movember Foundation site for more information on Prostate Cancer!

Day 27 (Part 2-Day 5)
Prescott, WI ➡️ Diamond Bluff, WI
12 miles today, 749 miles total!

Welcome Calvin to the Salty Walrus crew!🛶

Another "make-up" day in the books. Ian skipped this segment last summer, utilizing the nice weather to cross Lake Pepin instead.
It was a beautiful morning with plans to make it to Red Wing by dinner. However, it turned out to be another windy day out there!
Hopefully we'll be back next week to finish the 8 miles to Red Wing.

For those of you just joining us, Ian will be completing the rest of the river in segments. He'll be putting the most river miles in later this month, through October, with plans of making it to the Gulf around November 2-3 to kick off Movember!

Fog. Wind. Barges. Oh my!
The brother dou put in over 120 miles in 3 days!
Taking the Salty Walrus over the 700-mile mark down the Mighty Mississippi!

Due to scheduling conflicts, Ian will be completing the rest of the river in segments. For now, we're headed back to Minnesota to get some work done.
He'll be putting the most river miles in later this month, through October, with plans of making it to the Gulf around November 2-3 to kick off Movember!
In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for some make-up milage days of some parts he skipped around last year👀

Day 26 (Part 2-Day 4) (Yesterday 9/4)

Guttenberg, IA ➡️ Dubuque, IA
45 miles yesterday, 737 miles total!

Ian and Adam ended their day, yesterday, shortly after Lock & Dam #11. They were exhausted after sprinting to the dam to try and beat the barges. Even though they made it, the barge was scheduled and the guys were stuck waiting for over 2 hours, in direct sunlight. They did meet a wonderful couple, aboard a pontoon, while in the lock. Huge shout out to them for taking some pictures and guiding our guys to the marina for the night! Those waves were no joke and your kindness to bring them to safety means everything🙌

Another shout out to those who participated in another round of, "Guess the end point!" Congratulations to Ross and Melissa for your correct guesses! Send us your addresses and we'll send you some stickers!😎

What a beautiful morning for a paddle!
Ian and Adam left Guttenberg, IA at about 6:30 this morning. Once again, they're planning to paddle until they can't paddle anymore. Where will they end today? Closest one to guess will receive a 'Salty Walrus' sticker pack! Keep up the good work guys and have a wonderful day!☀️
