# # # Summer Vacation 2024 Review from Bob H: This summer, our family gathered for an unforgettable vacation at the Strachan Carriage House on Saint Simon Island. Our group of fifteen included Pop Pop, Gigi, Gigi's brother David and his wife Karen, our family with our three kids, David and Megan with their son Anzo (2.5 years old), Whitney and John with their daughter Piper (11 years old), and Pete and Kendra with their three kids, Greta (13 years old), Julius (11 years old), and
Anja 8 years old). The Strachan Carriage House was a charming slice of history, filled with character and beautifully maintained. Its spacious rooms and cozy atmosphere made it the perfect backdrop for our family reunion. Our days were filled with a delightful mix of activities. We spent long, sunny hours at the beach, where the kids built sandcastles and splashed in the waves while the adults relaxed and soaked up the sun. The house's pool was another favorite spot, providing a refreshing escape from the heat and a fun place for everyone to gather and play. Bike riding around the island was a highlight for many of us. The scenic routes and gentle breezes made for enjoyable rides, allowing us to explore
the island's beauty at our own pace. Evenings were spent together, sharing meals and stories, strengthening the bonds between us. Watching the kids form closer connections and create lasting memories with their cousins was truly heartwarming. Overall, our summer vacation at the Strachan Carriage House on Saint Simon Island was a wonderful experience, blending relaxation, adventure, and family time in perfect harmony. It's a trip we'll cherish for years to come. Bob H2024

Going to Washington, DC? Hope you will visit "Nymph of the Woods" and "Nymph of the Fields" at the National Gallery of Art. "The girls" were originally purchased by FDM Strachan at the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915. Congressman W.S. Stuckey acquired the statues when he and his family purchased the Strachan estate on St. Simons Island. "As kids, we played around these shrouded statues stored on the dirt floor of the garage," recalled Stephanie Stuckey, current CEO of Stuckey's Corp. Later the statues graced the congressman's DC home and in 1975 he donated them to the National Gallery.

Happy Earth Day! From 1966-1976 Congressman Bill Stuckey and his family owned Beach Lawn, the estate on St. Simons Island which included the Strachan Carriage House (then a dirt floor garage). In 1970 Georgia had passed the Coastal Marshlands Protection Act. In 1972, during the time he and his family enjoyed summers at Beach Lawn, Stuckey pushed, promoted, and was finally successful in getting Congress to pass Public Law 92-536 that would "keep Cumberland (Island)'s natural and wild character." Thank you, Congressman Stuckey, and all who saved our beautiful coast for generations to enjoy.

Happy National Tartan Day (April 6). We celebrate the Strachan family. Captain Francis Garden Strachan ran away from the family farm in Banffshire, Scotland to sail clipper ships between Europe and the Orient in the 1870s. Then in 1885 he founded the Strachan Shipping Co in Savannah at the Cotton Exchange Building. From Brunswick his son FDM Strachan became Glynn County's first millionaire by shipping timber, cotton, naval products throughout the world. Around 1910 FDMS built his summer cottage Beach Lawn on the southern end of St. Simons Island. The Strachan Carriage House (the historic four bay garage with servants quarters above and a 52 ft veranda) honors their memory and allows guests to enjoy stories and hospitality about Scots who made coastal GA home.

35 years ago, in April 1986, on the beach just west of the St. Simons Island village pier, 2 barges took on an unusual cargo: “Beachlawn,” a 7,000 sq. ft. 2-story summer cottage built in 1910 by shipping magnate and Brunswick business leader F.D.M. Strachan. Following a 4-day voyage up the intracoastal waterway carefully timed to slip underneath bridges at low tide and waved on by bystanders all along the coast, the house settled into its new home as the Haig Point, SC welcome center. Remaining on SSI were the gazebo (now located at the Lighthouse) and 4-bay auto garage with servants quarters that is known today as The Strachan Carriage House, a historic property offered as a vacation rental island oasis.
