Mayor Dominick Pangallo is pleased to announce that the City of Salem will be offering free downtown parking this upcoming weekend. In recognition of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, and in order to encourage residents and visitors to shop local this festive season, the City of Salem is offering free parking on Thanksgiving Day and throughout the upcoming holiday weekend.

Parking at all city owned lots, garages, and on-street spaces throughout the City of Salem will be free of charge on the following days:

Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 28

Then, as the holiday season kicks off, Shop Local! Parking is free throughout the weekend:

Black Friday: Friday, November 29

Small Business Saturday: Saturday, November 30

Sunday, December 1.

“As the holiday shopping season gets underway, we want to once again encourage Salem community members to shop local and support Salem’s small businesses!” said Mayor Pangallo, “We hope that free parking throughout the weekend will help Salem residents kick off the holidays here in our amazing downtown and support the local businesses that make our city vibrant.”

Please be advised that the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs has issued a Drought Alert for Massachusetts. For the Northeast, a Level 3 Alert ("Critical Drought") has been issued.

Due to unprecedented low rainfall over the last two months, with many locations recording their lowest rainfall ever, the Commonwealth is experiencing significant drought conditions. Wildfires are occurring across the state (208 fires in October and 115 fires in November so far). Smoke effects from extended drought fires have impacted local communities. Since August, all regions, except Cape and Islands, have seen a rainfall deficit of 7 to 9 inches. Streamflow has dropped significantly, resulting in dry brooks and streambeds, increased ponding, exposed beaches and sediments, and limited fish passage. Groundwater levels are declining in all regions.

Residents, Facilities & Businesses:

*Minimize overall water use
*Run dishwashers & washing machines only at full
*Fix leaks immediately
*Take shorter showers
*Ban on open flame & charcoal fires at state parks
