The community of Salinas has a strong connection to James Dean. James Dean's Last Drive to Destination Salinas California to race his new Porsche 550 Spyder. Sadly, he did not make it to the racetrack at the the Salinas Airport that day - September 30, 1955.

James Dean fell in love with Downtown Salinas and our “car culture” while filming East of Eden (plus our little farm town reminded him of his own hometown) and he was excited to visit us again for that qualifying race - had he won, he would have continued to race at the Pebble Beach event three months later.

We are all very happy to see artwork by our beloved muralist, John Cerney, gracing the entrance to the hometown of James Dean. Congratulations to Marion Indiana from all of us in Downtown Salinas!

This twelve foot tall James Dean cut-out mural and sign was created by California artist John Cerney and was installed at the entrance to downtown Marion, IN yesterday. The piece was commissioned by The James Dean Gallery in association with the Grant County Indiana Visitors Bureau.
