Welp. It’s that time of year again. First major storm is in the books here in Utah and we have snowpack! Time to start thinking about snow and avalanches as we all jones to ski and ride. And time to sign up for an Avalanche Course!

Knowledge is the key to making sound decisions in the mountains and it can also bring you to some really special places. (Picts from Utah and Alaska)

Our avalanche courses are heavily application based for backcountry skiers and splitboarders. Group sizes are limited to 4:1, which allows courses more realistic learning opportunities and the ability to see and work through terrain. All courses are offered with a robust online learning component from the American Avalanche Institute and are run by some of the industry’s most qualified staff.

We also have a yurt based 4-day Avy I happening in early February for those interested in a more immersive experience.

Still riding the high after a week in the Winds climbing Gannet and enjoying some much needed lake time, far away from the noise of modern life. Early September is prime season in the western high country if it has yet to snow significantly for the season yet. No bugs, moderate temps, plenty of daylight and few people. What a special place. Don’t tell your friends, but look us up if you do.

Backcountry Pros goes Africa! Just returned to civilization from a successful 8 day climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route. Special thanks to a great ground team! Karibu! One of the oldest established crags in North America. Climbing has been happening here for nearly 100 years. Who knows the spot? Who is largely credited? What about the specific routes? The basalt rock type- locally known as trap rock - is actually an outlier for the greater area, created by tectonic plates separating. A mini ‘great rift valley’ has been the result. All the surrounding areas are either granite or metamorphic granite (gneiss).

Rare relatively last minute opportunity. We have a privately guided yurt ski touring trip in the Uintas at Boundary Creek available March 25-28 or 29. Sleeps 4-5. A few spots remain for our multi day, yurt based AAI Level I and Level II Avalanche Courses this February. Based in the Bear River Range in Logan Canyon we spend multiple hands on days learning practical skills in real time. The terrain is varied and expansive with lot of powder skiing options. Meals are arranged and the living is oh so fun!
