What is a Stolperstein (Stumble Stone in English)? In this case it's a brass cobble stone marking the home of a victim of N**i Germany. This one, we found on our Christmas Markets Detour in December whilst exploring Bamberg. It reads: -- Here lived JOSEF PRENNER. Born 1903. Joined the resistance. Red Fighter (Communist resistance group.). Banned from work in 1933. Incarcerated in 1936. 1944 Penal Battalion 999. Buchenwald (Concentration Camp). Released September 27, 1945.--
Josef stood up to the N**is before they came to power. He was punished by them, losing his income. He was arrested in 1936 and deported to be murdered in the infamous Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Fate had it that the very US Army Forces that landed in Normandy on D-Day also liberated this concentration camp. Josef miraculously survived his ordeal. His unbelievable life story became our ad-hoc history lesson in the streets of Bamberg. Needless to say, our entire group was immensely moved. Our hearts stumbled.

It’s the last day of 2024. We stare out the window of Christoph’s childhood home into a monochrome forest dissolved in fog. There’s something uniquely disorienting about both the fog and this time before the new year. It’s an ethereal space suspended in the vertigo of what’s past and the hum of what’s to come.

We too sit in this quiet space, reflecting in gratitude on the learning we shared together in 2024. From the volcanic vistas of the Aeolian Islands to the solemn beaches of Normandy, from Greece’s myth-drenched landscapes to Germany’s cozy Christmas markets, each detour reinforced why we travel the way we do: not just to experience, but to learn through reflection on experience. To linger in those liminal spaces where curiosity dances with inspiration. To feed our wonderlust.

We thank you for being part of our first year as Dressler Detours and look with anticipation to 2025. Guten Rutsch (good slide) into the New Year!

Wishing you all a very marry Christmas! Thank you for making our season so bright.

What a beautiful journey we had! Danke to all our friends along the way who made it so special! We are waiting for you in Germany in 2025!

With Christmas season in full swing, Germany is aglow with holiday spirit. The air is heavy with spiced Glühwein and smoky bratwurst. Wooden stalls adorned with evergreen garlands glow under the twinkle of fairy lights. Friends and families huddle over steaming drinks, sharing laughter and stories.

It’s the eve of St Nikolaus Day! Are you ready? We sure are!

Growing up in East Germany, the Christmas season wasn’t all sugar and spice and everything nice. Sure, we had St. Nikolaus, the bringer of treats, but we also had Knecht Ruprecht, the bearer of punishment. To a child, Knecht Ruprecht wasn’t just a name—it was a warning. Known by many names acr...

June 6, 1944 – 80 years ago, the greatest amphibious invasion in history unfolded on the beaches of Normandy. It was here that extraordinary courage paved the way for the liberation of Europe from N**i Germany. While the sacrifices of that day are well-documented, Dressler Detours embarked on a uniquely profound journey to honor these heroes, made even more meaningful by the young learners who joined us.
