Franco to me defines the word character. Unapologetic connection to the past, raising animals like countless generations before him on a family farm is not a common thing in the middle of modern Italy. Marina and Mariano. She grew up here in this Tuscan farmhouse still occupied and worked by her family since the 1880’s. Marina is an in-charge woman and I wanted to portray that in this portrait. Earlier this spring she welcomed our little band of photographers with open arms and a torta to die for! Roberto is an important resident of Monticchiello, (population 200) a gem of a village we visit often. He’ll bend your ear about the Teatro Povero (Poor Theater) that the community puts on outdoors in the beautiful central piazza each summer. Look for Roberto in the only store in the village, but regardless grab a beverage, sit in the piazza and soak in this pristine hilltop village. Better yet, join us for our Tuscany photo workshop in May 2025.

In Siena the Biccherna Museum is a favorite of ours each year. Handwritten Siena archives dating to the 8th century reside in the wonderful old Palazzo Piccolomini and the good folks there allow us to photograph and study the books and remarkable cover art. And even creat an impromptu portrait now and then!

Who can resist a sunrise in the Val d’Orcia? 5pm comes fast after a classic Tuscan dinner and conversation late into the night but hey, there are some scenes even I can’t resist.

Last minute opening in Tuscany. All 2024 workshops are sold out but because of a late cancelation (health reasons) we have an opening for a couple. If you have the freedom to travel last-minute, this can be a wonderfully life changing experience.
