Franco to me defines the word character. Unapologetic connection to the past, raising animals like countless generations before him on a family farm is not a common thing in the middle of modern Italy. Roberto is an important resident of Monticchiello, (population 200) a gem of a village we visit often. He’ll bend your ear about the Teatro Povero (Poor Theater) that the community puts on outdoors in the beautiful central piazza each summer. Look for Roberto in the only store in the village, but regardless grab a beverage, sit in the piazza and soak in this pristine hilltop village. Better yet, join us for our Tuscany photo workshop in May 2025.

In Siena the Biccherna Museum is a favorite of ours each year. Handwritten Siena archives dating to the 8th century reside in the wonderful old Palazzo Piccolomini and the good folks there allow us to photograph and study the books and remarkable cover art. And even creat an impromptu portrait now and then!
