Copper Canyon adventure!

The Copper Canyon 9-Day Motorcycle Expedition is an adventure tour through Mexico's northern Sierra Madre Mountains, scheduled for April 5 – 13 2025 and September 7-15, 2025. The journey features a mix of paved mountain roads and optional unpaved routes. Riders with some gravel road experience are encouraged to participate, and the tour is suitable for dual-purpose motorcycles. Support vehicle is available for passengers who prefer to avoid unpaved sections. Participants can ride their own motorcycles or inquire about renting Royal Enfield Himalayan or Scram bikes.

Tour Highlights:
Tarahumara Indians: Encounter the indigenous Tarahumara people, renowned for their long-distance running abilities, many of whom reside in caves along the canyon walls.

Nuevo Casas Grandes: Explore a region rich in history, from ancient Paquimé Indian Pueblos to settlements by Mormon and Mennonite communities in the late 19th century.

Urique: Visit this historic mining town, established over 300 years ago, located deep within the canyon. The ride offers spectacular views as it descends from high pine forests to warmer chaparral regions.

Copper Canyon: Experience a vast network of canyons, covering over 25,000 square miles, offering both challenging old mining roads and superb twisting tarmac for motorcyclists. An area 5 times the size of the Grand Canyon in the usa.

San Juan de la Vega is most noted for its unique exploding sledgehammer festival as a tribute to "San Juanito", which takes place every February. Locals affix homemade explosives to heads of hammers. The explosives were made with matches, sulfur and fireworks. attaching a mix of sulphur and chlorate to the ends of sledge hammers which they then smash against rail beams. Today, this is mainly done in a field outside the town.

The celebration stems from the 17th century when the town’s namesake, considered “Mexico’s Robin Hood”, battled with the area’s wealthy landowners. The modern day celebration is a reenactment of this skirmish. Despite the concern of several groups and calls to end the tradition, the festival has continued for over 300 years.
