Bottlenose dolphins are remarkably resilient, even as babies. While bottlenose dolphins are fiercely protective of their young, we were able to notice that one of their babies already had scars. This is especially concerning, given it still has fetal folds, meaning it was born very recently. There are many dangers for an infant bottlenose, and it appears this one may have narrowly escaped from a shark! Any further information on this poor baby would be greatly appreciated.

Which dolphin baby is cuter? Common dolphins (first image) and bottlenose dolphins (second image) have both recently had an abundance of adorable little munchkins by their side. We love seeing them on our charters!

Gone too soon.
Another gray whale has beached right off Marine Room as of 4:30pm yesterday. NOAA and lifeguards are currently coordinating for the whale to be examined. Barely over a year old, this whale had a lot more life to live.

The notorious dolphin hunting ETP orcas have made an appearance off San Diego this week. On this encounter, they appeared to be hunting down deep, possibly on squid.

What a way to start the weekend! We had over 6 breaches on our whale watching trip today on board the Scout! This acrobat was one of at least 3 different whales we saw today less than 3 miles offshore.

We saw the first gray whale of the season right off the beach! Seen cruising just off the beach on today’s whale watching excursion with Big Blue Photo Boat. His spooky early migration is just in time for Halloween in San Diego!

We’re now offering Blue Water Safaris! We saw this handsome slab of a Mola Mola several miles off of La Jolla for its daily dose of sunbathing. These uniquely crafted critters often soak up the warmth of shallow waters in order to aid their digestion after long feeding dives in colder layers of waters where different species of plankton and jellyfish accumulate.

Raising a baby Risso’s dolphin takes a village, and all members of a pod contribute to protect the next generation. Given time and a respectful amount of space, the naturally rambunctious babies will be permitted a closer look at interloping humans. As a human myself, thank you dolphins.

Like baby Risso’s Dolphins? We had an incredible encounter today with several in a pod that was cruising off of La Jolla. You can even see the fetal folds on this one, which indicates it is likely less than a month old. Fully grown, this guy will feast on all manner of deep-sea creatures while diving down over 4000 ft.
