Students should not have their education, future and well-being put at risk for acts of protest.
On May 6, UCSD deployed law enforcement to dismantle a peaceful demonstration which resulted in student arrests and academic punishment.
On May 17, the ACLU-SDIC joined with four other organizations to send a letter to UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla urging him to protect students’ rights and drop disciplinary actions against students involved with the demonstrations.
Our colleges and universities must be places where ideas are exchanged freely, and where debate and even dissent are encouraged. Students should not be sanctioned or subjected to excessive, hostile policing for acts of protest.

Public safety must include safety from police violence. Alternatives to policing in emergency response have proven to reduce police violence and make communities safer.
These programs should be expanded nationwide, to ensure people are met with support — not violence — during a crisis.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s (SDSO) collaboration with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies makes our communities less safe.
We urge the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to immediately stop using county resources to respond to ICE requests for notification and transfers which result in the separation of families and deportation of community members.
Incarcerated labor has a long and problematic history rooted in racial oppression.
Prison labor is coercive and exploitative, but it doesn't have to be that way. Workers who are incarcerated should have voluntary, safe employment that pays them a living wage and provides them with marketable skills that help them find employment upon release.
UC San Diego's duty is to ensure student safety, yet on May 6, they chose police over peace. We urge UC San Diego to refrain from police action to suppress student expression, respect the fundamental rights of protesters, and prioritize dialogue and non-violent conflict resolution.
While livestreaming San Diego Bay last year, San Diego WebCam, a small YouTube operation, captured some embarrassing moments for the U.S. Navy, which has a base in the bay. In one case, it was the near-miss of colliding warships. In another, a bad repair job made a ship look “bug-eyed.”
In response, the U.S. Navy tried to shut down the webcams. Forcing San Diego WebCam to shut down the cameras would violate the First Amendment—and “national security” is no excuse. The law on this is clear.
Whether you’re at San Diego Bay livestreaming, taking photos from a sidewalk in your neighborhood, filming a protest or recording the police, you have a constitutional right to do so. Full stop.
