The TRUTH Act Forum is where you can learn how the the San Diego County Sheriff Office (SDSO) collaborates with federal immigration authorities, like ICE and Border Patrol. It also provides space for the community to provide public comment and for the board of supervisors to ask questions directly of the SDSO.

On April 22, we need to show up at the TRUTH Act Forum. We must demand that the sheriff fully adopt the county’s sanctuary policy and stop all collaboration with DHS agencies!

Immigration supports innovation. In California, more than 40% of all workers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields are immigrants.

Between 1990 and 2016, 16% of all US inventors were immigrants. And despite making up a small percentage of the inventor population, immigrants produced almost a quarter of all U.S. patents during this period.

Immigrants fuel innovation, which saves lives. From groundbreaking medical discoveries to life-changing scientific advancements, diversity of thought drives progress. When we welcome new people, we welcome new ideas—and that benefits all of us.

Immigration is key to maintaining our country’s status as a leader in innovation. We need to show up to protect our immigrant neighbors and combat attacks on our rights.

On Monday night, the San Diego legal community showed up in force for our event, Upholding Constitutional Principles Amid Legal and Political Challenges: Attorney Salon with ACLU President Deborah Archer, Esq.

In conversation with Norma Chávez-Peterson, ACLU-SDIC executive director, Deborah shared an insider’s view on how the courts remain a frontline defense against the threat of a constitutional crisis. They also discussed how California attorneys can use litigation, policy advocacy and community engagement to ensure our state remains a stronghold for civil rights.

Christie Love Hill, ACLU-SDIC advocacy and legal director, provided a critical update on our local litigation efforts and shared the ways that lawyers and law firms can support our work.

As Deborah put it, "The best response to disorganized chaos is organized resistance."

Thank you to all who joined us!

🚨 Today, despite our testimony urging them to pursue real solutions, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to approve amendments that will expand the county’s camping ban—choosing punishment over progress. 🚨

We won’t stop fighting for policies that invest in housing, not handcuffs. Our community deserves real solutions that treat all people with dignity and respect.

💬 Stay engaged and demand action—this fight isn’t over. The board of supervisors will be voting on the final version of the camping ban ordinance within the next 60 days. We will need your help to fight it!

Today, Felicia Gomez, ACLU-SDIC immigrants’ rights senior policy advocate, provided public comment at the San Diego County Board of Supervisors meeting in opposition to item 9 – an effort to repeal the county’s sanctuary policy.

Sanctuary policies help keep families together and ensure our local tax dollars are used to promote safety for all residents – not to separate families through mass deportation.

The ACLU-SDIC, alongside our partners, has fought for years to achieve the sanctuary policy that passed last year and is a part of our ongoing work to stop all collaboration between the San Diego Sheriff’s Office and DHS agencies, including ICE and Border Patrol. State and federal law makes it clear that local governments have every right to focus on serving their own residents, instead of voluntarily choosing to collaborate with ICE. Efforts to repeal this policy betray our values, roll back our hard-fought progress and harm our border county.

The item did not pass, which means our county’s sanctuary policy remains intact!
